Derek always treats me like a queen. Every week he gives me a new mixtape of songs that remind him of my eyes or smile. To be completely honest, he gives me so many mixtapes that I've started giving them to Charlie. He really enjoys it. Derek also supports my environmental beliefs. The other day in the cafeteria at school, he tried using a plastic fork. But I encouraged that he use a metal fork because 1) He is earth club treasurer and 2) I believe small acts like that can really help the environment for the better. Although he didn't want to, he did it because it meant a lot to me. His simple acts of kindness made me feel so special and warm inside. No matter what issue would come up in Candice’s life she wouldn't tell anyone, she would just internalize it. She did everything she could to make it look like she had it all without any problems. She wanted to be perfect for everyone else, even though it didn’t make her completely happy. The one person who made her feel less alone and happy was Derek. Derek made Candice feel better about herself because she was able to tell him things he need to get done. Patrick explains how girls choose boys who have problems so they feel as though they have a purpose. A purpose meaning they can work on them and try to change them into want they want. And because Candice comes from a middle class family, she isn’t to familiar with the hardships that Derek may be going through so she begins to feel that Derek needs her for moral support. When Derek hit her, she took the blame and told Charlie that she was okay and that she could handle it. Candice took the responsibility for Derek hitting her, like most women do in abusive relationships because she really loved him and believed he would change. Since Candice internalized her problems, she pushed people away who wanted to help her. She thought she had all the answers. Once she was pregnant she no longer had any answers she just broke down because Derek left her once he found out. All she had left was Charlie to look too for help. Even though Candice was mean to Charlie for so long, he was still there for her when she needed him. This part of the book helped reunite their brother and sister bond. At this point Candice was sad, yet still hopeful. She knew that she still had her family support and college ahead but as of right now the saddest would slowly go
