A great emphasis is placed on East Egg and West Egg, the geographical location in which many scenes take place. Situated right outside New York and separated by what is now Manhasset Bay, East Egg and West Egg sit identical in every physical shape. But it is not in their similarity that Fitzgerald comments on so much on throughout the novel, it is their differences. One does not classify East Egg and West Egg through physical means but through the moral and social standing of each character. As the novel progresses we can observe the development of each character and how they do truly belong in either East Egg or West Egg. West Egg is the place where one settles if they have amassed a sizeable fortune in a relative short period of time, this meaning those who have not inherited a previous affluence. A closer analysis reveals that these environments clash to form a whole different stance in the characters moral and social behaviors. While West Eggers are more willing to help the less fortunate The East Eggers are not. Those of the West are often from humble backgrounds and are willing to get their hands dirty. One such character would be Nick Carraway the novel’s narrator and considered the main protagonist: "I lived at West Egg, the-- well, the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them" (Chapter 1, page 9) He along with Gatsby could be considered one of those living ‘The American Dream’. Across the courtesy bay into East Egg we see the “white palaces of fashionable East Egg [that] glittered along the water (Chapter 1, page 9)”. The High Class Society that lives here such as Tom Buchanan would from the perspective of most readers, be classified as unpleasant. Tom along with several other characters (Daisy) reflect this
