Eastman Kodak Case Study The case study presented for us of Eastman Kodak is a perfect example of a once-great company that fell to its successors in a field that the company had essentially created. As such it provides insight into how even strong companies with thoughtful executives can run afoul of the business environment. The case study presented here is relatively simple. A company that has once defined the technological direction of a field falls behind its competitors as they in turn redefine the field. Of course, although this is not covered in this case study, the same dynamic will make these successors vulnerable to being overcome in their turn. The factors that came together to fell the photographic giant are not uncommon in analogous in situations in which one company has held a dominant position in a field for a very long period of time. This company could have been the first major company in the field or simply a company that built up dominance in the field. In this case Kodak had developed most of the key technologies of modern photography and the quality of its products as well as the skill of its business strategies had allowed it to stay ahead of any upstart competitors along the way. Because of the dominant company's dominance in the field, it invests/has invested a considerable amount of capital as well as prestige into its way of doing business. The problem in this case is concerned with Eastman Kodak losing its market share in film products to lower-priced economy brands. Over the last five years, in addition to being brand-aware, customers have also become price-conscious. This has resulted in the fast paced growth of lower priced segments in which Kodak has no presence.
1. Evaluate Kodak's strategy in traditional photography. Why has the company been so successful throughout the history of the industry?
The problem in this case is Kodak's steadily eroding market share and shareholder value in the film rolls market. This is especially undesirable given the fact that the market has been growing at a tepid 2% annual rate and the steadily increasing threat from competition. Kodak needs to come up with a strategy for corrective action so as to arrest this decline, regain market share and increase share holder value. Kodak's strategy is to reposition itself by targeting a new segment of price sensitive customers and re-segmenting the super premium customers’ space by including a wider segment of special occasion customers.
Accordingly, “major new-product development activity was replaced by incremental product line extensions” (p.56) that resulted in a major revenue stall. The premature core abandonment cause is illustrated with the Kmart example. While the company was investing in a range of unrelated businesses searching for growth, Wal-Mart developed effective distribution and inventory systems. Kmart’s management failed to monitor and match these systems and fell far behind its rival. Hitachi’s example illustrates the talent bench shortfall. One of the leading causes of the stall was the company had executive management that lacked capabilities.
