An eating disorder is an illness that causes severe disruptions to an individual’s normal diet, such as eating unusually small amounts of food or severely overeating. Relentless unhappiness or concern about body weight or shape may also result in an eating disorder. Common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa is an emotional eating disorder characterized by an obsessive desire to lose weight by refusing to eat, and bulimia nervosa is a chronic eating disorder characterized by continual episodes of excessive food intake followed by self-induced vomiting to avoid weight gain. Anorexia and bulimia are both serious eating disorders with similarities and differences in their behavioral, psychological, and physical symptoms. …show more content…
Also, they exhibit an extreme fear of weight gain. Other behavioral and emotional signs of anorexia are refusal to eat, denial of hunger, lack of emotion, and irritability. Other behavioral and emotional symptoms of bulimia are eating unusually large amounts of food with no apparent change in weight, frequent trips to the bathroom after meals, excessive exercise. A person suffering from bulimia engages in bingeing and purging. Bingeing is a period of excessive indulgence, like eating, to excess, and purging involves self-induced vomiting or misuse of laxatives or

Eating Disorders we think about are, Anorexia Nervosa, and Bulimia Nervosa. Binge Eating Disorder is lesser known however all three can affect males and females (Gray & Zide, 2013). A definition of an eating disorder is an illness that is characterized by irregular eating habits and an obsession with body weight and shape. This leads the person to develop habits surrounding inadequate or excessive food intake. Eating disorders may develop at any age, but typically develops during teen and early adult years. Eating disorders frequently coexist with other disorders such as, anxiety disorders, substance abuse and depression.
There are two main categorizes when it comes to eating disorders. The first is anorexia nervosa and the second is bulimia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa is described as a “body image disturbance together with a relentless pursuit of thinness, often to the point of starvation” (Silva, 2007, pg. 285). Anorexia in simple terms can be described as not eating. Whereas bulimia nervosa is different, it is the act of eating large amounts of food and later on purging it to get rid of it.
Eating Disorders are defined as deviations of eating behavior that can lead to extreme weight loss (cachexia) or obesity, among other physical problems and disabilities. The main types of eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. These two diseases are closely related because they represented some symptoms in common: a prevalent idea involving
Eating disorder is a term used to describe several psychological disorders characterized by abnormal eating habits. Some of the most common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. Anorexia nervosa is probably the most well-known of these. A person suffering from anorexia nervosa will obsess over weight gain and show unusual anxiety related to weight gain. Depending upon the type (binge-eating/purging type or restricting type) a person will either consume food and then attempt to “purge”, a term used to describe a method of forced removal of food from the body such as self-induced vomiting, or they will restrict the amount of food consumed. In most cases the person will be under healthy weight and often see themselves as average weight or even overweight. In bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorders the affected person will eat excessive amounts of food. People suffering from these diseases report feeling out of control during their binge eating episodes. In bulimia nervosa binge eating episodes are followed by some method of purging whereas in binge eating disorder they are not, although the person normally expresses feelings of guilt or embarrassment afterwards. People suffering from bulimia nervosa are usually average weight which can make detection difficult. Those with binge eating disorder are normally
On average, women are more likely to experience an eating disorder. Although, men are not eliminated from eating disorders. Eating disorders pertain to a patient who is unsatisfied with one’s current body image. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are the most common eating disorders. These two eating disorders are similar in ways that are characterized by low self esteem, body dysmorphia, and signs of depression. However, anorexia, anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa should not be confused. Anorexia is the
Binge Eating Disorder is a recent addition to the DSM-5. This disorder is characterized by regular episodes of binge eating. An individual experiencing this disorder will usually not Binge use compensatory behaviors, such as self-induced vomiting or over-exercising after they binge eat. Many people with Binge Eating Disorder are overweight or obese. (Butcher, Hooley, J. M., & Mineka, 2013).
What exactly is an eating disorder? There are multiple different types of eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, eating-disorder-not-otherwise-specified, and binge eating disorder. These are just some of the more common eating disorders people can suffer from. Anorexia nervosa according to National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), is “characterized by self-starvation and excessive weight loss.” In other words a person who suffers from anorexia nervosa refuses to eat in hopes to lose weight at an excessive pace. Bulimia nervosa is “characterized by a
Anorexia is an eating disorder that struggles with the fear of gaining weight and refuses to be healthy. Another eating disorder is Bulimia, which is when you overeat followed by forced vomiting and excessive exercise. Binge Eating is one of the most common eating disorders along with Anorexia and Bulimia, Binge eating is when you lose control over one’s eating. All of these common eating disorders all suffer from guilt or depression. “Individuals with bulimia and binge eating eat large amounts of food to reduce stress” (CEDC). They also could have risky behaviors, such as dealing with drugs or alcohol or even death. People with Anorexia or Bulimia are very concerned with being overweight or in other words fat.
Bulimia has come to be known as bulimia nervosa for its similarity to another eating disorder known as anorexia nervosa, and also known as the binge- purge disorder for its cycle of bingeing and purging. Like anorexia, bulimia is normally developed during adolescences or early adulthood and “both are characterized by severely restricting food consumption.” (“Bulimia Nervosa”) However, unlike anorexia, bulimia is also characterized by binge eating. Binge
Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa are a few of the most common disorders struggled with today. Anorexia Nervosa is a condition of the intense fear to gain weight, which results in consistent lack of eating. Bulimia Nervosa, involves frequent episodes of binge eating followed by throwing up because of fear of gaining weight. The mortality rate for anorexia is the highest of all mental disorders yet the genetic factors relating them were not a huge concern to look into. It is easy to think that Anorexia and Bulimia are mentality induced only, but there are indeed genetic factors related despite how small the evidence may be. Personality disorders are heritable, and are commonly developed after an eating disorder or a large reason someone develops one. The study of serotonin, a compound found in Bulimia, Anorexia and depression, can be passed down through genes and they play a small part in eating disorders worth acknowledging. Inheriting genes that make an individual athletic naturally can affect the chances of eating disorder. There is no evidence that one particular gene could cause an eating disorder, but there are various traits and levels of compounds that when inherited, increase the likelihood of developing one.

For decades, both men and women have struggled under the pressure of looking a certain way, what is considered "attractive". The pressure of society 's view of perfection is all around us, whenever we watch a movie or pick up a magazine. This idea of perfection has driven thousands of adolescents to turn to eating disorders, including bulimia nervosa. During the time I was bulimic, I remember watching movies and fashion shows, then looking at myself in the mirror and thinking “I’m never going to be skinny enough”. I now realize how wrong I was for punishing myself like that and how much damage I was doing to my body. That’s why I think it’s important for everyone to read about bulimia, because this disorder may go unobserved for years and
