Mass tourism is one of the largest industries in the world (Hunter, 2002). However, it can lead to many types of pollution such as noise, air and water pollution and it can be quite a negative impact on the environment (Marx, 1997). Ecological tourism on the other hand, can lead to more positive impacts and less negative ones. Ecological tourism has been growing rapidly in the travel industry (Higgins, 1996). This is most likely due to the fact that it has so many benefits. Ecological tourism can be defined as “travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of local people” (Winson, 2006, p. 8). Instead of promoting energy use, it is a good idea to promote environmentally friendly modes of transportation. Hotels contribute to the pollution of the economy since most hotels are often environmentally unfriendly (Copeland, 1992). Promoting environmentally friendly activities like camping would lead to fewer hotels, which would help reduce the amount of pollution. Instead of staying at environmentally unfriendly hotels, individuals can go camping outside and enjoy the wildlife and instead of driving to a tourist attraction, they can walk or bike and take in the scenery and the outdoors. Water pollution can be a big issue with mass tourism as sewage often leaks into rivers, lakes and oceans (Marx, 1997). This can be a huge problem for the wildlife living in those waters since it is polluting their habitat. Promoting ecological tourism could help in reducing water pollution as well as other types. With mass tourism, a lot of visitors come to a tourist destination and that causes the environment to become overcrowded, but it also can damage many resources (Beladi et al., 2009). This is why ecological tourism should be considered. It could help reduce the overcrowding at one given attraction since there could be so many other types of activities going on in other areas of the town or city.
