Economic And Social Problems In The Early 19th Century

In 1861, a Civil War broke out in the United States when the South declared their independence from the Union. There is a great amount of reasons that people can argue how the Civil War was started. However, what most people don’t understand, is that most of the events leading up to the Civil War were related to slavery. Slavery was the core of the North and South’s conflict, which led to a very vicious feud.

It began in 1861 and would end in 1865. The Civil war was America’s Bloodiest sectional war, more than 620,000 people died and many more citizens were injured. Conflict began in the United States between the north and the south. The North was considered the Union and the South was considered the Confederate. Once Lincoln was elected and pledged to keep states free of slavery, states from the south began to secede from the United states and form their own nation. Although the North refused to see The Confederate States of America as legitimate it did not put a stop to the southern states' secession or prevent conflicts that occurred between the states. A Civil War is a battle between the same citizens in a country. The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the independence for the Confederacy or the survival of the Union. By the time Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1861, in the mist of 34 states, the constant disagreement caused seven Southern slave states to their independence from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy, generally known as the South, grew to include eleven states. The states that remained devoted to the US were known as the Union or the North. The number one question that is never completely understood about the Civil War is what caused the war. There were multiple events that led to the groundbreaking, bloody, and political war.

On April 12, 1861, a date that changed our great nation, began the Civil War when Confederate soldiers invaded the Union’s Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay. Made up of eleven southern states, the Confederate Army battled the Union in a bloody war that resulted in the deaths of approximately 618,222 men. The key issue as to why the Civil War began was states’ rights. The southern states wanted authority over federal government and the power to abolish laws that did not benefit them, such as laws prohibiting slavery. This caused a great split in our young nation and resulted in significant leaders on both sides of the armies.

As time passed the rapidly changing society in the nineteenth century, in 1820 the north and south began to have serious conflicting problems that were proved unfixable by compromise. During this time, the north underwent major social, economic, and industrial changes known as the Antebellum Period. While the south generally clung to king cotton and slavery and thus remained essentially the same. This arose a manifold of controversies with how issues such as tariffs, slavery, and land should be handled. Both the Union and the Confederacy tried to create compromises to resolve these problems, yet both sides were never completely satisfied no matter how hard they tried. The Civil War started because of uncompromising differences between the free and slave states, and they wanted to prohibit slavery in the territories that haven’t became states yet. As the War Between the States worsened so did economic difference among the northern and southern states which turn neighbors against neighbors. In 1865 the Confederates surrendered and the end result of the Civil War turned out to be the goriest war ever fought on American territory.
