People have different interpretations of what success may mean to them. In the article, “Leave No Child Behind” by Marian Wright Edelman, the author explains many lessons on the steps to become successful. According to some, success is measured by social status and wealth. I agree with Edelman’s lessons that there is no free lunch, we should not be afraid of taking risks or being criticized, and we should never think that life is not worth living.
I agree that there is no such thing as free lunch. I notice there is nothing given to us without a price tag on it. One time I remembered when I really wanted the new Barney rolling backpack. I told my mother I wanted it. She told me that I would have to work for it, or else I would not receive it. There I was, a little 8 year old girl, cleaning around the entire house. Edelman says, “Don’t feel entitled to anything you don’t sweat and struggle for.” I agree with Edelman that if we do not put hard work and sweat into wanting what we want, then we will not achieve it. Taking risks will enhance what we have in life, it will make us grow as a person. By being a young college student, I am drawn to take risks every day. One time I felt verbose choosing either to further my education, or to work. I choose my education over wealth, because I knew there is always going to be another opportunity for me getting a career. Edelman says, “Be willing to stand up for something that matters.” I agree that if we do not speak up for ourselves no success will be offered. In a related experience, one time I had a decision between taking an amazing opportunity to move to Washington, or just stay home. I chose to leave because I thought moving and becoming independent would help me become successful. Success to me is to determine the amount of happiness one feels.
