Eden Project Biomes are an attraction located in Cornwall, United Kingdom. It features two large biomes that are multiple inter-linked geodesic dome structures, one in which has a Humid Tropical environment and the other having a Warm Mediterranean environment. The two biomes cover 2.2 hectares of land and encapsulate over 5,000 species of plants from two different climates. Conceived by Tim Smit, The Eden Project Biomes were completed April 2001 by the design team of Nicholas Grimshaw, Anthony Hunt Associates and Arup engineering. The Eden Project Biomes structure consists of two main parts. The first being its frame which consists of different sizes of hexagons, pentagons and triangles. The second being the layers of…show more content…
This node is made out of cast iron, weighs roughly 80 kg and was designed specifically for this project. To allow for easier manufacturing, the ends of the beams that make up the sides of the outer polygons were cut rectangular. To secure the beams to the node, bolts that are high strength and were pre-stressed were used. In order to fix the beam in its right position, a M16 bolt was used, this also allowed the transfer of torsional moments. The cushions that cover the hexagons have aluminum framing for them that are supported by short brackets that are welded onto the top of these beams. A detailed drawing of these beams and their connections is shown below. Detail of Beam and Bowl Node Arched Girder Support of Steel Frame Top Ventilation One of the features of this structure that make it unique is that it isn’t just a singular dome, it is multiple intersecting domes that cover a larger area. These intersections must be reinforced in order for the structure to remain stable. A triangular truss girder connects the two intersecting domes, the longest one spans up to 100 m. These girders needed to bend with the arch of the dome, because of this the top and bottom chords of the girder are bent, the diagonals, which are thinner than the top and bottom, remain straight. These arched girders are hinged to concrete foundation blocks. The
