Many writers have appeared over the years of humanity. The Shakespeare of the old and J.K Rowling of the present. One of the most mentioned authors in American classrooms is Edgar Allan Poe. Poe wrote many pieces such as “The Black Cat” and “The Raven” and another piece called “The Cask of Amontillado”. In such pieces, Poe uses many tools of the trade to make the story or poem interesting. A few he uses to make his work more interesting is with his vocabulary usage, repetition, and tone. To begin with, Poe’s unique vocabulary choice makes the piece more interesting and appealing to the reader. One such as “borne” (Page 1) to symbolize how they carried the weight of Fortunato’s wrongdoings in a more interesting way than using the word “carried”, …show more content…

In “The Cask of Amontillado”, the main character points out his intentions to get revenge, saying that he “...vowed revenge” (page 1) and that he “...gave utterance to a threat” (page 1) on Fortunato. He not only to make it dangerously clear that he intends to get back at Fortunato while unsettling and drawing the reader’s interest as to what the main character will do. Right away the readers are given a sense of unsettlement as the main character seems pushed over the edge of sanity and know he does not intend to act mercifully. He also swears revenge often in the piece, saying “I would be avenged” (page 1) and that “I must not only punish but punish with great impunity” (page 1). When the main character says these venomous words multiple times in the piece, the repetition intrigues and unnerves the readers further and informs them of how dangerous the main character actually is. Pointing out how unstable the main character is, the readers now realize that there is no doubt that they will bear witness to the main character’s crime of the unsuspecting Fortunato.
