Edgar Allan Poe once said, “Those who dream by day are aware of many things which escape those who dream only by night.” When the brain is awake, its powers of creativity and thought are bound by reality, even if it is a subconscious restriction. If someone can tap into the creativity of limitless dreams even when awake, then they can find an extraordinary amount of ideas and concepts that are otherwise lost. Ideas are easily dismissed by those who believe that because such things aren't possible now, they never could be. In this quote, Edgar Allan Poe is saying that those who are able to be as open minded and imaginative while awake as when they are dreaming at night, will show many cognitive benefits. The quote implies that Poe believes that dreaming while awake improves awareness. This is supported by focusing on the word escape. Poe himself struggled with great mental disturbances such as narcissism and alcoholism. In this context the quote is saying that those who are haunted by hallucinations, are suffering in a dream-like state of psychosis. Despite this, there is still stronger evidence that Poe meant for his quote to tell readers that dreams are an invaluable source of creativity and ideas. Even with his mental health troubles, Poe is still cited as a brilliant author over 150 years after his death.
