Why do people oftentimes stay up way past their bedtimes reading a book? Why do they spend every and any chance they get reading their chosen book? Well for most, it’s because they love that the author poured their heart and soul into the work of literature. Some authors, such as J.K. Rowling, are better at producing well written works of art than other authors like E.L. James (Full offense).
One of the most renowned authors throughout history is Edgar Allan Poe. Poe is still considered even today as one of the greatest authors. Poe was able to write in such a way that he even created a new genre of writings: the Detective Genre. But how does Poe do it? How is Poe able to think of something so abnormal? One of those stories is “Hop Frog,”a lesser known Poe tale. In Poe’s “Hop Frog,” he tells a tale of a dwarf jester, Hop Frog, of a king proud of his humor. The King tasks Hop Frog with creating all the themes and decorations of the king’s balls and other events. The King, being a proud jokester, forces Hop Frog to drink alcohol against his will because it makes him extremely sick faster than a normal person. This is an extremely obvious use of Poe’s personal life in his stories. Poe can drink a small amount of alcohol and get extremely drunk; Hop Frog can drink a small amount of alcohol and get extremely drunk. The two are similar even further than that. Hop Frog, once drunk, would be able to produce on the spot a plan and a theme to the ball without a hiccup of thought. Poe was also one with these effects, where “one glass ... was sufficient to rouse his whole nervous nature into a state of strongest excitement, which found vent in a continuous flow of wild, fascinating talk that irresistibly enchanted every listener with siren-like power” (patterson 1246).
