Poe’s Death: A Case of Rabies Edgar Allan Poe was known worldwide for his infamous and wicked tales of murder and revenge, which makes it ironic that his death is surrounded by controversy and suspicion. It is believed that Poe had many different causes of death - suicide, murder, cholera, Hypoglycemia, rabies, syphilis, and influenza. With much evidence to back this claim up, the most reasonable conclusion about Poe’s death was that he died of rabies.
To begin with, as Poe’s death is mainly argued to be rabies or alcohol intoxication, he could not have died of alcohol because of the symptoms presented. Symptoms of intoxication include drowsiness, vomiting, breathing difficulties and even unconsciousness, but not hallucinating and seeing …show more content…

Dr. Benitez was assigned to a man, not knowing that the man was Poe at first. The doctor theorizes that he contracted the rabies virus, rather than the onlookers that say that Poe was found extremely drunk in a gutter. This is explained more thoroughly through his letter to, who claimed that the rabies theory had flaws in it. The letter reads, “A diagnosis is not always easy or straightforward. The incubation period in humans may be as long as a year, if the inoculation is small and occurs on the hand or foot. Thus the lack of evidence of a bite or scratch is not inconsistent with the diagnosis. Finally, although physicians knew how rabies was transmitted at the time of Poe's death, even at the time of Louis Pasteur's first use of a rabies ''vaccine'' in 1885 the causative agent, a rhabdovirus, was unknown.” It also goes on to say that professionals at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have shown that many people do not even remember being bitten, as Poe did not remember either. In conclusion, more evidence points to rabies being the cause of Edgar Allan Poe. However, it may never be clear how Poe died - as multiple things could have contributed to his death. Moreover, Poe died not of alcohol intoxication, but of the rabies
