Biography Obituaries Edgar Allan Poe died at the age of 40 on October 7, 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland, due to congestion of the brain and alcoholism. Poe was born on January 19, 1809 to actors Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe Jr. Edgar never really knew his parents, as his father left the family and died when Edgar was young. His mother died from tuberculosis at the age of 24, when Edgar was only three years of age. Poe was sent away from his siblings to live with John and Frances Valentine Allan. Poe was not encouraged to write poetry from his school headmaster and his guardian, John Allan; however, he continued to write poetry on the backs of Allen’s business papers. Poe went to college at the University of Virginia, but did not continue his studies as John Allan cut off his funds. Poe turned to gambling to help get more money, but he squandered the money away and had to return home. During this time he published his first poetry book in 1827. Edgar later joined the army and was enrolled into West Point, where he was later kicked out for neglecting duties and not showing up to training or classes for a week. Around the time Poe was kicked out of West Point, he had published his third book. He then traveled from town to town looking for jobs and opportunity. Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents David and Elizabeth Poe were professional actors. They had three children: Henry, Edgar, and Rosalie. When in 1817, Mrs. Poe died, Henry was taken to be raised with his grandmother, Edgar was adopted by the wealthy couple, Frances and John Allan, and Rosalie was taken by another couple. The luckiest one became Edgar because his new parents were very wealthy people, so he was able to go to different schools. When he was seventeen, he entered the University of Virginia, but because of his gambling and drinking problems he was dismissed from there.

John Allan was a very wealthy man but he only gave Edgar a third of his school requirements and this alienated him from Edgar. When Allan’s wife dies Edgar also decides to move out because he could not put up with John Allan. Edgar loved poetry from a tender age. He even wrote verses to girls that he developed feelings for. He could have had his first poetry book published by the age of 14 years but there was no support both from his teachers and his adoptive parents. In the course of his life Edgar became an alcoholic and mentally disturbed and this enhanced his writing skills. He created his characters trough imagination to show mystery and adventure.
Neither of his first two collections attracted much attention. "Poe married his 13-year-old cousin Virginia Clemn. She burst a blood vessel in 1842, and remained a virtual worthless until her death from tuberculosis five years later" (online-literature, pg. 2). He addressed the famous poem "Annabel Lee" to her in 1849. In 1836, he received an editorship at The Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond. Around this time, Edgar began using drugs and dinking very heavily. He even showed up at events drunk. Still, he was writing incredible stories and poems. Poe received a large amount of recognition, not only for his poetry and fiction, but as an exceptional literary critic. He also achieved popular success, especially following the publication of his poem "The Raven." Edgar had fallen for Merrie next and she died of brain cancer. After a period in which he was involved in various romantic affairs, Poe planned to remarry, but in late September, 1849 he arrived in Baltimore for reasons unknown. "Poe suffered from bouts of depression and madness, and he attempted suicide in 1848" (online-literature, pg. 2). In early October he was discovered nearly unconscious in a Baltimore gutter. Edgar was taken to Washington College Hospital. Some say that Poe called out the name "Reynolds" on the night before he died. He died on early in the morning of October 7, 1849. He was then taken in by two other guardians, Frances Valentine Allan and John Allan, a wealthy tobacco merchant. Poe’s brother and sister were living with other families at this time (p.1). However, in 2011 Augustyn claimed that “He was later taken to Scotland and England (1815-20), where he was given a classical education that was continued in Richmond” (p. 100).

When Edgar Allan Poe was only two years old, he had to deal with his mother's death and his father disappearing. Poe was raised by his foster parents, Frances Allan and John Allan. He attended a boarding school in England from the age of six until age eleven. Later, Edgar enrolled for a year of college at the University of Virginia. At age eighteen, he published the first set of poems and later joined the army for two years. After Poe had dropped out of the army and from age twenty-two and on, he struggled with a life of poverty because of all of the gambling debts that had accumulated throughout his early life.

While he struggled with critics during the early ninetieth century, he was rediscovered in the mid-twentieth century, said Sova. He was born on January 19th, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts said Sova. Sova also went on to say, Poe’s mother was Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and his father was David Poe, Jr., with two siblings; Bagert, (2008) states that David Poe, Jr. abandoned the family while his mother was pregnant with Poe’s sister. Poe married his cousin Virginia Clemm in 1836,she was only 13, then in 1837 they went to New York there he published the narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym his only novel. In the summer of 1846 he moved with his wife to a cottage in what was a rural area in Bronx N.Y; she died there of tuberculosis in January of 1947.On October 3, 1949, in Baltimore a stranger found him delirious and in need of medical attention, a few days later he died at the age of 40 from unknown causes.
