Edna And Her Husband In Chopin's The Awakening

Edna and her husband, Léonce, have a marriage that lacks affection and adventure. Edna personality is much different than what was expected of the typical New Orleans woman of that time. She is more independent, outgoing, and bold than the women of her time, which is something that Léonce does not necessarily see as acceptable for his wife. He expects Edna to partake in the “normal” practices of New Orleans women of the time, despite Edna’s countless expressions of distaste. Her marriage to her husband is lifeless and loveless and in many ways what is lacking in her marriage to Léonce is one of the main reasons Edna begins her awakening. Her lackluster marriage begins her search for something more fulfilling, something that will allow her to express her true self, her true desires, in a way that she has not been able to before. This is when she meets Robert Lebrun. Robert is a single, 26 year old man with whom Edna finds much interest. Robert’s relationship with Edna is a very integral part of Edna’s awakening. Although Robert has a known history of courting a different woman, many times who are married, each summer at Grand Isle, there is something different about his relationship with Edna. It is Robert’s delicate treatment of Edna that shows that there is something more than simply the superficial, flirty actions he has had with the women of his past. It is when Robert himself realizes that his feelings have surpassed far beyond those with past women on Grand Isle that he decides to leave for Mexico.
