Edson Arantes do Nascimento is commonly referred to as the best soccer player in history. Born in Tres Coracoes, Brazil on October 23, 1940, Nascimento (who goes by Pele), grew up in Bauru, Brazil. He was raised in poverty and, showcasing his desire for the sport and tremendous work ethic, practiced soccer technique with a ball made from rags. After learning of his love for soccer, Pele eventually joined a small soccer club. By the time he was 15, he signed with a professional soccer team. Fast-forward two years, Pele competed in the 1958 World Cup and scored five goals. This launched him into superstardom and he competed until 1975 after a long series of injuries. The academy offered to pay his medical expenses, so Messi moved to Spain.
