Throughout this course, a new perspective has provided us with the opportunity to take a look at many of the different ways in which the digital world has become one of the most dominant viewpoints of today’s generation, and how technology has taken over and welcomed itself into many aspects of our lives. This course paper will take a look at one topic of interest in particular, which in hopes will shed some light on a heavily discussed topic in the education world: does technology help or hinder the student. This paper will look to prove the point and discover more about the way in which technology has been incorporated into the classroom, both in an elementary context as well as a post-secondary context, and the effects that it has had on the student, the teacher, and the overall academic development that accompanies it.

The topic I am going to focus on throughout this paper is how education has changed over time. Over the many years of education changing, technology has had a great impact on how we learn and how teachers go about teaching. The three main topics I am going to focus on throughout this paper is how technology has taken over, what new teaching and learning styles we have, and whether or not technology has really helped with education.

Nearly 20 years ago when the World Wide Web was released, many people in society had no idea what type of advances were in store for the technological world. Endless opportunities became available worldwide in every avenue of approach, one of those being education. Education has blossomed in the light of technology and will only continue to do so for many generations to come. Although it can be argued that technology is negatively effecting the education system, more innovative ways of learning are becoming available and society has no choice but to conform to these advances.

This chapter is all about how this new way of learning cultivates minds. In each of the scenarios listed, people learned so much more than they would have through just paper resources. Therefore; the use of resources and individual motivation led people to seek more and broaden their imaginations.

With the right restrictions placed, technology is a good way to teach and learn in a classroom setting.Technology now more than ever is expected to be used in some way shape or form when it comes to learning in any particular subject. Because of this, it is hard to ban or use little of any technological objects that contain any internet access. The world seems to accept the use of technology anywhere more and more. This perspective change influences the way technology is used for any reason.

Technology has revolutionized the human experience by changing the way one learns. Technology can best be defined as a tool that supports and promotes human learning. This can be seen through the usage of calculators, tablets (example: iPad), Smart Boards, video cameras, and, of course, the computer. These are all innovations that can have a profound impact on classroom learning. Although there are some schools that have a strict policy that technology should be removed from the modern day classroom, other schools believe that integrating technology into the classroom helps prepare our students for the elaborate world they will face going forward. The education system around the world has progressed and changed in a plentiful amount of ways, and the concept of knowledge and learning has changed in modern day. For example, certain schools around the globe are moving on to implementing technology in classrooms because it provides many benefits and statistical research that states how students are improving their academic readiness because of the instant access to information, a greater engagement and interactive process in learning, and the personalization that instructors can do towards the educational experience that students receive. The benefits of technology in class can be rather debatable, for there are people who think it's a distraction, but it certainly seems to be beneficial according to the increase of passing percentages in schools.

There is much in the literature regarding the use of technology in education. According to Dede (2009), Banister (2010), Peled and Schocken (2014), my topic can be characterized as technology in education is an effective tool for motivating student engagement, increasing academic success, and providing new environments for students to learn. Thus, the more technology that is incorporated in a students’ earlier grades, the more inclined they will be to prefer that type of instruction in their latter years. It is an important topic with respect to education because the wave of new technology is increasing at rate never before seen in the field of education. These articles track the study of technology use in the field, and how they are beneficial for my study of technology in education. All of the articles support the idea of the use of technology in education, and each represent a different aspect in which technology can improve a child’s education.

Computers have always impacted education in a remarkable way. Education-technology dates all the way back to the 1630's. First came a school, then a library, a pencil invention followed, next came the keyboard, an actual computer in 19505, and twelve years later came the first computerized teaching system. Over the years, technology alone has evolved; calculators, smart whiteboards, iPad's, and many more has since came about. Although, such change has overwhelmed the lives of many, computers have changed education today for the better because they are resourceful, provide flexibility, and they have effectively expanded the way we can teach and learn.

Over the last several years I feel there has been a huge shift in the way people around the world are taught and the way people learn in the classroom on a day-to-day basis. In my opinion this is not a result of change to a single element involving teaching techniques, but more specifically a change in amount (increase) of technology used by teachers and students alike. Technology provides many major benefits to society, proven by its dramatic advancement over the last 30 years, but it also presents the question- If we are choosing to make our lives easier by using technology, which in essence is what it is made for, are we really learning/ comprehending as much as we once did?

John Dewey, a leader for the progressive movement in education in the United States once said, “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.”

“We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick). This quote by David Warlick illustrates the necessity of implementing technology into the educational system through the use of a metaphor that compares it to the pen and paper of our time. As technology continues to advance, it’s expanding influence in classrooms results in an increase in student comprehension and rate of achievement.

To begin let’s start when “technology” was first getting integrated into the classroom setting. In 1890 the latest and greatest technology was the chalkboard. In 1920s the invention and fascination of the Radio led to an never before used type of learning on- air classes a precursor what we use today with online learning. By the early 1970s a modern day classroom staple – the Scantron was making its way into schools across America. And finally the computer, which was introduced to classroom in the mid 80s with laptop by Toshiba and Apple’s PowerBook. By 1993 daily computer usage was reaching a level close to what we see today when the PDA was launched on society by Apple computers.
