First of all, in my country, the students have studied the lessons and special program before they come to the US. So, they have English classes to be able to get in US. Almost students have completed four years of high school studies in order to qualify for admission to a College in US. Shujaa of the State University of New York discusses the importance of learning that there is a difference between schooling and education. Can education exist without schooling or vice versa? Shujaa’s article gives an insight into the conjunction of schooling and education and how they impact the culture of African Americans.
Diverse cultures within the United States are rapidly developing and growing and the educational sector is the number one target to ensure that English –learners are receiving adequate education. Within the educational sector there are administrators and teachers who are involved in students lives on a daily basis to ensure that education is equal. In order to achieve the vital objective of equality, socio-cultural influences on ELL students, bilingualism and home language use, parental and community resources, and partnerships between families and schools all have to be considered to provide an opportunity for equal education.
College students can introduce the English language by providing more programs in colleges throughout the world and enforcing the program to be a requirement to obtain the desired degree one must wish to acquire. In the past, many people believed that a high school diploma was good enough to get a good job with which support a family, but now 76% of college professors and 63% of employers believe that high school diploma is no indication that a student has learned the basics for any job.1 Test scores and studies have shown that America's education system is lagging behind many other industrialized countries due to poor implementation of new curriculum that doesn't help kids prepare for the all important standardized testing. These tests make or break a student's year in terms of meeting the goals set for them at the beginning year. If the American education system is solely test focused and doesn't teach practical skills to kids, then we are going
One would think that as a World Superpower the United States education system would be producing exceptionally high caliber young men and women to become contributing members of society upon graduation. However, in many ways, the opposite is shown to be the case, with declining test scores, with a 19% dropout rate among high school students, with a 41% drop out rate of college students, and 40% of the graduates unprepared to either continue their educations at universities or become worthwhile members of the workforce. These declines can be attributed to many factors including lack of parental involvement, teen pregnancy, rising tension in world affairs, drug use, and many others, however, our government 's involvement in the school system is another major factor and is the current focus of this paper. In it I intend to show how many of the government 's policies with regards to education are proving to be a major hindrance in the preparedness of our youth once they 've completed their requisite milestones for graduation. (U.S.A Department of Education, 2012)
Is the United States education system the best system in comparison to the rest of the world? There are positive aspects to the system, but there is also negative ones that can be improved if the United States took in consideration the way other countries run their education system. Students should be taught life skills that will help them make the right decisions and help their life be less stressful and keep their mental state healthy. Instead of allowing students to have the mindset that the subjects they learn are useless, schools should be teaching them the way their studies will help them with their futures. The U.S. education system is problematic and needs improvement in terms of students’ preparation for their future, student
The United States is considered by many to be a world leader who excels in every arena. In education, however, the U.S. has fallen behind other countries in Europe and Asia, such as China, Korea, and Finland. These countries outperform the United States when it comes to education. In order for the United States to continue to compete in the world economy it has to improve its system of education to compete in changing times. The United States education system is inferior to many foreign countries education system based on how U.S. students score on tests compared to students in foreign countries.
The United States education system is currently ranked 17th worldwide (“Global Grade”). According to the dictionary, education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. In a survey conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, adults in the United States scored way below average, and better than only two of the twelve countries it was being compared to (“Why Other Countries Teach Better”). Does the United States really want to be average or below with a skimpy ranking in a subject of such importance? The United States is the superpower leading the world in many ways such as in military or political power, but European and Asian countries are succeeding us in the academic world. Education is the basis of most things in life and one of the most powerful tools a person can obtain, so the United States lacking in it will eventually be detrimental and allow other countries like China to pull ahead in the race to be the best. Americans are competing with more qualified and better educated people from around the world for jobs and success, but it is not their fault they were not properly prepared. Although the United States education system does have its perks, there are many problems that need to be resolved immediately, like the manner in which schools are conducted and the distribution of funding.
Thesis statement: The United States education system has weaknesses that should be remedied by emulating the education methods of other countries such as Finland and Japan.
I found an issue quite evident at Simmons Pickney. I found an issue with the education system and how the structure of the programs did not allow the majority of students to genuinely express themselves nor did it set them up for success in high school. The environment present at Simmons Pickney was seemingly hostile for the most part when it came to the staff. They were constantly yelling at the students even if they were doing nothing wrong; It seemed that the teachers that were sent to the school were at the lower percentile in their classes in college. One teacher in particular, who was supposed to be teaching chemistry could not even balance a simple molecular equation, one that took the volunteers (who were originally sent to the school to help the students with the construction of their boats and to help connect the students at Simmons Pickney with their maritime community, but were now tutors) who had also attempted the equation and completed in less than a minute. The school seems to be set up to fail, and an administrator had even stated the school might be nearing close due to the lack of funding. This funding comes from the state and is based on grades, and I do not think that putting students, most of which have great potential and are quite sociable and intelligent when allowed to be, in a situation that is set up to fail is anywhere near fair. While I have never really had experience dealing with this type of structural deficiency, it is clearly evident that
English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who wants to make connections with the world we live in should learn English. I had English language classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that English will be learned most efficiently in the boundaries of an English-speaking country not in the home country because of some cases. Therefore, I came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university.
The education system has been a controversial issue among educators. Requirements of school do not let student choose what they want to study for their future. It’s a big issue to force student study specific curriculums, which don’t help them improve, and what they like to create something. Educators choose a general system for education to all students which based on general knowledge. Intelligent or genius students have to be in that system of education, which doesn’t let them improve their creativity. Educators attempt to change that system to make it better, but their changing was not that great to be an example for the world. Also, did that change qualify education system to compete other systems or not? In some examples and
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela. Without education, there is simply no telling of what this world would be like. There wouldn’t be doctors, lawyers, businesses etc. Life and everything around us would be fatuous. Schools and education give us a plan in life and help guide us. Throughout the years education has changed tremendously. It had its improvements throughout the decades, and it also has had its falters as well. Education in America is an issue in this country and it definitely needs to be tweaked and improved. Education is what makes us people who we are and what we will be. Nelson Mandela had it right, there is no weapon more powerful than education.
Throughout the history of civilization, education has been an important tool in shaping an individual as well as the society that the individual is a part of. In the older civilizations, only the elite upper class had access to education. This kept these people at the top of the social ladder, and suppressed the common people who did not have access to the same education as the nobles. We have come a long way since then, with every child having access to a free high school degree. However, there is still some inequality in this modern education system that has similarities to the old injustices. In this day and age, a college degree is a great start for a young adult starting to enter the work force. According to a study conducted by Pew
