A social institution is defined as a set of rules and procedures that are set for meeting important needs in a society and as a result pattern social relationships and interaction. (Palmiotto & Unnithan, 2011) Each society focuses on several vital needs that must be dealt with, so the society can survive and continue. Members of the society should channel use their sexuality for procreation. There are several institutions in the society. These institutions include family, education, the government, religion, and economy. Family is a social institution that is required that they bring up their children, so the society does not diminish because of the lack of new members or neglect. It can impact their family because they encounter unresolved emotional problems affect the police officer’s development, motivation, productivity, and effectiveness. (Palmiotto & Unnithan, 2011) Problems that police officers may face with their family could involve changing their work schedule, frustration, the public embarrassing them, and problems with sexual intercourse because of the long hours they spend at work. Police officers may also meet a family member while on duty in which they will have to remember they have a job to do but it could be hard for them to arrest a family member who is breaking the law which can be stressful. When police officers respond to domestic violence cases it could be difficult. They must counsel or mediate the issue, they may have to separate the people involved, or arrest a person or people involved. (Palmiotto & Unnithan, 2011) There were mandatory arrest policies created for domestic violence cases. People being arrested for domestic violence changed the nature of spousal and domestic partner relationships within the family setting. Education has an impact on police. Several people that are in jail or prison has never finished school. There are at least 2/3 of people who does not have a High School diploma or GED. Some people feel that police officers should have specific educational qualifications. Researchers Carter, Sapp, and Stevens 1989 states that having a college education outweighed the
