It is clear that colleges are starting to fall behind on teaching the basic principles that should come with an education. It is shocking that my underlying fear of society not being taught enough to survive in the real world is indeed true. With public education being degraded to only useless common core principles, it is almost like society is purposely being dumbed down for the benefit of the elite. These essays did, in fact, educate me on the valuable importance of the humanities along with STEM education as both are beneficial when joined together. I have learned that the humanities are actually the key to creating a well-informed, educated person with the ability to think for themselves. I have always had questions regarding the structure of education and its higher cost when I was younger, moreover, I will say that these six essays have answered the questions I have always pondered. These essays were beneficial in convincing me of the value of an education by answering my long-awaited question about education, convincing me of why the humanities are important alongside STEM-based learning, and that our society is on the path to a downfall if these problems involving the lack of the humanities are not solved soon. When I first read these essays, I was regarding them with the mindset of another assignment I would be compelled to complete as I was not taking them as seriously when I tried reading them with the mindset of just trying to complete an assignment. However,
I found “The Educated Person: A collection of Contemporary American Essays” to be an indispensable source of information for new and continuing students. This work of art is not merely the accumulation of essays created by esteem professors and faculty, it is a collection of works that can unlock the hidden potential of students. I found three essays to be particularly enlightening. Those essays are “Having a Degree and being educated”, “A Different Minor”, “Freedom of choice and the wisdom of elders”.
In his essay “Is College Worth the Money?”, Daniel S. Cheever, Jr. contends that, “The real question is whether students are getting their money’s worth” (102). He emphasizes the value of education and not only the cost. Higher education is the focus of Cheever’s essay, but I believe the same question of worth can be asked concerning elementary through high school education as well. Both public and private schools offer distinctive educational opportunities and each individual needs to resolve the question of value. There are many facets that give value to an education; however, the cost cannot be ignored.
The primary goal for schooling, from early child learning to graduating college, is to build a well educated and socially acceptable generation for tomorrow’s America. The crucial development of these young children hangs on the shoulders of teachers, parents, and themselves. Most people believe that attaining a proper school based education is what allows children and young adults to grow into responsible and successful men and woman fit to run this nation. However, there are a few key factors that are of high importance when attempting to achieve a useful education.
Children do not seem to have a sense of future and they often live in the present which is valuable because they are still young. Schooling puts pressure on their future because they are candidates of the future and their adult life is on hold. Though children are young to yet decide their future, they should have the options and experiences to have references for their ideal adult life. Dewey puts pressure on teachers have a duty to facilitate the students to help discover what they are interested in. By finding students’ interest, teachers should teach their students in the idea play so that students do not seem to be forced to learn something but rather it is because they want to learn. To add on, he believes that children should be making the choices through experiences and emphasizes “hand-on” learning which further indicates teaching in play and having experiences. Dewar uses the phrase “think for oneself” to the ideal education system, a person doing an action based on their own decisions without the help or influences of others which means that the proper way of teaching is, teachers aren't supposed to feed children the answers but rather children are suppose to come up with an answer but the teacher is there to guide you. every individual within themselves have untrained skills but are waiting for it be released or be stimulated. This relates back to Kliebard idea of having children in programs set for a specific job but if they have specific jobs that do not need
Education is what prepares you to what part of society you become. In Horace Mann’s “Report of the Massachusetts Board of Education” written in 1848, he tells of the importance of education, and the changes that need to happen in his era. Mann says that education “beyond all other devices of human origin is the great equalizer of the conditions of men—the balance wheel of the social machinery.” In education today, Jean Anyon shows how of education does not give equal opportunities for the reasons why to get an education, “By means of early education, these embryos of talent may be quickened, which will solve the difficult problems of political and economical law; and by them, too, the genius may be kindled which will blaze forth in the Poets of Humanity” (Mann). Ken Robinson shows the problems within The United States of America’s education system’s “No Child Left Behind” act. Modern American educational systems have not been as equalizers to all children citizens giving no equal opportunity, and no changes are planning to improve the education that leaves children behind.
We all are raised differently, with a variety of diverse stories that follow. It’s not likely reading and writing are a factor to who we are. When I was two years old, I was consistently having surgeries on my right-hand due to hand disorder called syndactyly. The privilege of having consistent help became my down fall, I wasn’t motivated to do the work on my own. My fifth-grade year was the reality check I needed to endure to realize school wasn’t just a waste of time but a necessity to my future. I had a cast on my arm from surgery and was dreadfully struggling to keep up in any of my classes. I failed math that same year and, was clinging to social studies an English by a thread. Yet, I was surrounded around intelligent role models who mapped out the path to success for me. The following summer was my vacation before proceeding my education into middle school. I had to do a summer assignment called “Summer Reading”. Two books, two pages of summaries for both, journal logs, and much more included. I was already prideful that I would get assistance and didn’t have to deprive myself of the energy of doing it myself.
We are required to learn, but are not taught in the ways we should. Today’s society is run by the teachers who are teaching the new generation of the world. The issue with this is how the teachers are teaching and how much information the students are actually taking in. This country has teachers who understand the workload that they give the kids, but do not put into perspective how much work the students have for their other classes. Also, the kids today are in a new generation where technology rules over everything, therefore I believe that it is harder for the students to learn. It is harder for the students to learn because they have online textbooks, which are harder to focus on while using, they have to turn everything online (including when the internet is not working), and also they have to learn from online schooling too. Also student athletes have to start their homework much later than the other students, which also adds more stress to keeping their grades up for college. Students of today’s society have to deal with the teachers who are not teaching correctly, and also they have to deal with the amount of workload being put on them from each individual class.
The value of education is indisputable. Education can get you to your dream. Parents concentrate a lot on education. People move around the world to get a better education for their children. “The value of education is to individuals and to society goes far beyond increased income potential, higher education attainment is linked to a host of beneficial behavior and good health outcomes.” I intend to discuss the importance of education and the value of education. In addition, I will reflect three ways that education can be effective, which are media earnings, healthier behavior, and voting. My plans are for the future to go to college and to get more knowledge and get a good college degree.
Education is the main source to gain knowledge, to begin a successful journey to life's opportunities and advantages. The true value of an education is only what the students, teachers, and administrators make of it to create a foundation for the learners of today and tomorrow. I was born and raised in Pakistan. The education system is very different compared to the United States. Everything about America’s Education system was very new to me. It was shocking to learn about the racial injustices that persist here, even though education is free for all students in K-12. If it was not then one man can assume that the wealthy student that attends private and earn a higher quality education. Whereas, a poor student goes to public school where they cannot earn a great education. I was dismayed when I heard and read about injustice in schools. It is important for society to learn the ways students are funneled to prison from school, so that future generations will be prevented from this great injustice. Although the values of having equal rights in public school education have been diminished due to certain school policy rules. Relatively new school policies such as the Zero Tolerance Policy and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) have influenced more too, "School to Prison Pipeline". No Child Left Behind Act was passed in 2002 for students in grades kindergarten through twelfth. According to Posey, “It was designed to introduce national standards to a system in which students in
“Values are virtues, ideals and qualities on which actions and beliefs are based. Values are guiding principles that shape our world outlook, attitudes and conduct.” (Dhunnoo. et al., n.d.). Human beings have needs: physical and emotional. Some of these needs are catered at home while others at school or religious institutions or the society itself. The school as an institution of education is responsible for the cognitive and affective development of the learners. However in Mauritius, our primary school curriculum has been focusing mainly on the cognitive domain since ages. Teaching is mostly done in a traditional way; spoon-feeding and rote learning since teachers are exam-driven. They would teach students in order to prepare them for the final exams at the end of the year, rather than for their whole life. The main goal of the education system in our
College drop outs have been glorified by society. The likes of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, and Mark Zuckerberg are highly patronized for their success. They are known for being successful people and they were able to achieve their success even if they did not get good grades in school, nor did they finish going to school. It can be said that they were not academic achievers. Nonetheless, the legacy of their success continues to prevail. They have reached the kind of success that everyone aspires to have. Often, their stories are used to encourage and convince people that doing well in school is no longer important to be successful.
Education has always been extremely important to me, especially since I am only the second one out of my parents and three sisters to graduate from high school. I have had several obstacles in my way to face, but these hardships make me very determined that I will get my college degree. I am the first in my family to go to college. I come from a family where education was not as important like it is to others. My father is my biggest inspiration. He was less fortunate of being able to finish school. He had a very difficult childhood and had to pick up adult responsibilities at an earlier age in life. He was only able to finish up to the eighth grade. He was the oldest in his family of four other siblings. His dad got very sick and was not able to work and provide for the family like he needed too. This led my dad having to drop out of school at eighth grade to go home to help with other siblings, help his mom with house chores, and work to help with paying bills. My dad can barely read and write, this made it very difficult for him to get good paying jobs. He learned how to be a mechanic working on vehicles, because there is very little to read and write to figure out how to fix a vehicle. He is very good at being a mechanic. This was his career all through out his life and still is to this day working long hard hours. Seeing my dad work so hard all my life inspired me to get a good education. It was difficult as a child to see my dad struggle so much. Our parents could not
Most people agree that the value of education is indisputable. Education is important to everyone because it leads everyone to a better future and a better life. Education helps people have more knowledge and to improve their thinking. Education is as important as this because education gives people the knowledge and skills they require and need. Education is just like a weapon that anyone can have because if you have education nothing will stop you from what you want to do or change. Furthermore, the people that studies and graduates have the highest paycheck comparing to these people that do not study. I intend to discuss the significance of education and summarize if a student should or should not attend college after high school and how it affects their future. I will reflect on how the significance of education will affect my future after high school. I plan to go to college after high school and get educated.
Education is an important part of US society and all its issues should be recognized and addressed. Unfortunately this is not the case. Education has many issues and the three most important are the day-one problem, bullying, and high dropout rates. These issues are often a big problem and can lead to an education that does not do the United States justice.
Education should be valued to the highest extent. Education is how we obtain knowledge about our surroundings. Education gives us a perspective on issues, politics, and life in general. Education allows us to interpret things in unique ways we didn’t imagine were possible. Most importantly, education gives us a platform to change the world. Without education, many people would be lost. Education is a delicate process that should be handled with care. Educators have the abilities to form knowledge within their students. Some of them use their abilities to the fullest power, while others completely abuse their abilities. As an 18-year-old college student, I have come across both kinds of educators, even though I wish I had not.
