The Aims of Education
The overarching aim of education is to fill students with knowledge enabling them to grow both mentally and socially to carry on a successful life. Students need to be taught critical thinking strategies to use when handling difficult situations. Students should have fundamental background knowledge in multiple areas. Students should be prepared for work, post-secondary education or whatever path the student takes after graduating.
Authentic learning opportunities should be created, where students are the central part of the learning. As students complete authentic activities, they will find value, purpose and meaning to the objectives at hand. School is a place where we can learn so much from one another. I …show more content…

It is easy to get into a mindset of drill and practice. However, it is important that authentic learning is happening in the classroom. Students need to be able to make connections to the material taught in class, achieve their daily objective and retain information to use later on.
Dewey thought that a child’s learning happens through an active process that should combine psychological structure and sociological interaction to fully learn the task at hand. The learning that takes place in my classroom is not just by learning and doing, but also by applying the skillset and seeing the connection to other situations. We need to give students a way to think and apply skills to both situations they face now and situations to come later down the road. Freire’s model of education consisted of basic knowledge being stored and active learning taking place as the child is engaged. I attempt to use active learning strategies to teach concepts that will allow students to think critically, also achieving a higher level of thinking as measured by Bloom.
Students learn from a variety of styles. It is important to use a variety of styles and evaluate how students learn with each style. Students should be introduced to new strategies as they may show success with methods they have not experienced before.
