The Aims of Education
The overarching aim of education is to fill students with knowledge enabling them to grow both mentally and socially to carry on a successful life. Students need to be taught critical thinking strategies to use when handling difficult situations. Students should have fundamental background knowledge in multiple areas. Students should be prepared for work, post-secondary education or whatever path the student takes after graduating.
Authentic learning opportunities should be created, where students are the central part of the learning. As students complete authentic activities, they will find value, purpose and meaning to the objectives at hand. School is a place where we can learn so much from one another. I

It is easy to get into a mindset of drill and practice. However, it is important that authentic learning is happening in the classroom. Students need to be able to make connections to the material taught in class, achieve their daily objective and retain information to use later on.
Dewey thought that a child’s learning happens through an active process that should combine psychological structure and sociological interaction to fully learn the task at hand. The learning that takes place in my classroom is not just by learning and doing, but also by applying the skillset and seeing the connection to other situations. We need to give students a way to think and apply skills to both situations they face now and situations to come later down the road. Freire’s model of education consisted of basic knowledge being stored and active learning taking place as the child is engaged. I attempt to use active learning strategies to teach concepts that will allow students to think critically, also achieving a higher level of thinking as measured by Bloom.
Students learn from a variety of styles. It is important to use a variety of styles and evaluate how students learn with each style. Students should be introduced to new strategies as they may show success with methods they have not experienced before. Learning, as defined by Slavin (2012), is “a change in an individual caused by experience” (p. 116). Learning can occur intentionally or unintentionally. All learning, however, is stimulated by something that is the learner (student) has encountered. As an instructor, your goal every day is to use the right stimuli to capture the student’s attention so they can absorb the knowledge you are trying to share.
I feel that the goal of education is to open up a world of possibilities for learners. The purpose of education is to show someone that they have the ability to do and be whomever they want to. Education is simply there for bettering oneself and one’s world.
Students have their own best way in effectively learning the lesson. With the diversity of students, the problem is each student has a preferred learning style. It becomes undeniably one of the reasons that make it difficult to achieve the best expected outcome out of teachers’ effort. However, teachers try to incorporate various teaching techniques to make every learning opportunity become productive, meaningful, and relevant for the learners.

I may often guide my students as they approach problems, encourage them to work in groups to think about questions and issues, and support them with advice as they tackle adventures, problems, and challenges that are embedded in real life situations that are both satisfying to my students and interesting in terms of the result of their work. Getting educated is very important for every person. It goes without saying that each of us has to have a proper education. We learn how to read, count and write. These are the basic abilities we acquire and use during our life. The problem with many of today’s students is that they do not see, understand, believe or make connections with what they are learning. For some of today’s students, education is nothing more than drill and practice with very little relevance to their world (Gardner, 1991). The purpose of education is to develop young minds with the values and principles that are required of a being a productive and thriving citizen. An education gives children the ability to think and reason critically. It is extremely important that children are educated to think for \right and wrong. For example, children that do not graduate high school. The number of adults in correctional facilities with high school diplomas versus those without are very unbalanced. By assessing where my students are with respect to our mutual learning goals, I can provide the scaffolding they need to build connections between what they already know and the new understandings they seek to create. I embrace active learning activities because it stimulates intellectual camaraderie and cooperative problem solving. In order to teach successfully teachers must learn about first learn about their students. Teachers must assess the student’s capabilities and interests. Some students are visual learners, while others learn from hands on activities, or verbal communication. Not all students can learn through memorization, rather they learn through interest and relation to the topic. “To realize what an experience, or empirical situation, means, we have to call to mind the sort of situation that presents itself outside of school" (Democracy and Education). The curriculum should encompass material that is most useful for a student to learn. It seems that in the majority of schools, students are not given the flexibility to guide their own learning, but rather follow rigid instructions that destroy the student’s imagination.
There has been much debate in education concerning the purpose of schooling in recent years. Functionalist scholars purport that schools exist for the transmission of knowledge and values in order to create a collective and cohesive social group. The invention of writing and schooling is the greatest invention that we as a society have ever created. As an individual, I believe that education is by far the most significant aspect of being a human being. I believe that is always important to challenge ourselves, no matter how difficult the challenge may be. Throughout my entire life I have been a student and I will remain a student even when I become a teacher. As the famous saying goes: “you learn something new every day.” Education does not end when one finishes a class, when one graduates, when one begins their career, instead it continues until the end of their lives.
