Discuss the situation that led to an employee blowing the whistle on the organization. “Edward Snowden was approaching his 30th birthday in the spring of 2013 when his life changed forever. An employee of Booz Allen Hamilton, Snowden was an infrastructure analyst for the NSA when in May he released to The Guardian and the Washington Post details of the previously classified program Prism that The Guardian noted involved “direct access to the systems of Google, Facebook, Apple and other U.S. internet giants” He also shared with The Guardian classified information pertaining to the NSA “collecting the telephone records of millions of U.S. customers of Verizon”. Snowden handed over other documents, and soon decided to flee the U.S. to avoid prosecution.” …show more content…

I believe that employees should have the freedom to openly believe in their guiding values, religion, and morality. I do not however, think they should necessarily have the right follow those beliefs as it pertains to their employment. For example, I believe that good order and discipline are necessary for a military to run efficiently. With that being said, if I am instructed to carry out an order that does not violate anyone’s safety, and is lawful in nature, I must do so whether it conflicts with my own personal values or not. I believe that employees need to have a more broad, “big picture” set of values with regards to their employment. Some examples may be a person who values honesty, being ordered to falsify financial earnings to keep stock prices high. Or perhaps someone who values responsibility, having information that their company is knowingly producing products that could harm their customers. This includes a "whistleblower bounty program. The SEC program rewards individuals who provide information that leads to an SEC enforcement action in which more than $1 million in sanctions is ordered.[61] Whistleblower rewards range from 10 to 30% of the recovery.
