Discuss the situation that led to an employee blowing the whistle on the organization. “Edward Snowden was approaching his 30th birthday in the spring of 2013 when his life changed forever. An employee of Booz Allen Hamilton, Snowden was an infrastructure analyst for the NSA when in May he released to The Guardian and the Washington Post details of the previously classified program Prism that The Guardian noted involved “direct access to the systems of Google, Facebook, Apple and other U.S. internet giants” He also shared with The Guardian classified information pertaining to the NSA “collecting the telephone records of millions of U.S. customers of Verizon”. Snowden handed over other documents, and soon decided to flee the U.S. to avoid prosecution.” …show more content…
I believe that employees should have the freedom to openly believe in their guiding values, religion, and morality. I do not however, think they should necessarily have the right follow those beliefs as it pertains to their employment. For example, I believe that good order and discipline are necessary for a military to run efficiently. With that being said, if I am instructed to carry out an order that does not violate anyone’s safety, and is lawful in nature, I must do so whether it conflicts with my own personal values or not. I believe that employees need to have a more broad, “big picture” set of values with regards to their employment. Those values should include (but are not limited to) safety, responsibility, and …show more content…
Some examples may be a person who values honesty, being ordered to falsify financial earnings to keep stock prices high. Or perhaps someone who values responsibility, having information that their company is knowingly producing products that could harm their customers. Additionally, under the provisions set forth by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, “Subtitle B gives the SEC further powers of enforcement. This includes a "whistleblower bounty program. The SEC program rewards individuals who provide information that leads to an SEC enforcement action in which more than $1 million in sanctions is ordered.[61] Whistleblower rewards range from 10 to 30% of the recovery. The law also provides job protection for SEC whistleblowers and promises confidentiality for them.” (Wikipedia LLC). Thus, with some form of protection now written into law, the chance for a whistleblower to reveal information has increased under the protection of
Edward Snowden and the PRISM leak: On June 6, 2013, The Guardian broke the news that the U.S. National Security
Edward Snowden took advantage of his access the government’s vast electronic surveillance operations. Snowden had access to more sensitive information than Manning but, in his dealings so far with the Washington Post and The Guardian, he has made a key point of not releasing all the documents he had which is saving him from harsher punishment. ("What Bradley Manning Leaked.”) Many of the documents that Edward Snowden had exposed were related to our military capabilities, operations, tactics, techniques and procedures. Even a confidential Pentagon report written by military intelligence officials claims that Edward Snowden's leaks had put U.S. soldiers at serious risk and encouraged terrorists to change their strategies. ("Snowden Leaks Could Cost Military Billions: Pentagon.") However, in the middle of 2014, the NSA's director, U.S. Navy Admiral Michael S. Rogers, said that while some terrorist groups had changed their communications to avoid surveillance techniques revealed by Snowden, the damage done was not significant enough to claim it as an immediate threat or danger. Still, in February 2015, “the NSA director said that Snowden's disclosures created "blind spots" in the NSA's surveillance by revealing U.S. strategies to monitor terrorism”.( "What NSA Director Mike Rogers Doesn't
On June 6, 2013 the details of the National Security Agency’s (NSA) surveillance activities where given by Edward Snowden to the public; raising concerns of Americans about their privacy. Edward Snowden, a former employee of the NSA, gave the alarming details of surveillance programs in his interview on how the NSA accesses our emails, calls, internet activity, and anything else that is related to technology. In this system of surveillance the NSA can gather data from companies and tap the cables that are vital for moving around information from technological devices, they may also use their relationships with technology companies to get emails or information straight from U.S. servers. (Cawley, Kiss, Boyd, Ball) Nevertheless, the claim is
On the 20th of May 2013, Edward Snowden arrived in Hong Kong carrying four laptops that would assist him in gaining access to some of the government’s most highly classified information. Twelve days later he met with journalists Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill along with documentary creator Laura Poitras. Code by code, Snowden began to unveil to them the secrets behind the government’s security systems and showed them documents proving that the NSA (National Security Agency) had been storing gargantuan amounts of data about the day to day lives of every day citizens. With
Privacy has endured throughout human history as the pillar upon which our authentic nature rests. Yet, in an age darkened by the looming shadow of terrorism, another force threatens to dominate the skyline and obscure the light of liberty behind promises of safety and security: government surveillance. As an employee of the NSA, Edward Snowden broke his vow of secrecy to inform the public of our government’s furtive surveillance acts, but does this render him traitorous? To answer this, we must first ask ourselves, traitorous to whom? When the very institution established to protect our fundamental liberties intrudes on our privacy from behind a veil of secrecy, should such informed individuals resign from judicious autonomy and
Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency (N.S.A) subcontractor turned whistle-blower is nothing short of a hero. His controversial decision to release information detailing the highly illegal ‘data mining’ practices of the N.S.A have caused shockwaves throughout the world and have raised important questions concerning how much the government actually monitors its people without their consent or knowledge. Comparable to Mark Felt in the Watergate scandals, Daniel Ellsberg with the Pentagon Papers, Edward Snowden joins the rank of infamous whistleblowers who gave up their jobs, livelihood, and forever will live under scrutiny of the public all in the service to the American people. Edward Snowden released information detailing the
Edward Snowden. This is a name that will be in the history books for ages. He will be branded a traitor or a whistleblower depending on where you look. Many Americans feel that Edward Snowden is a traitor who sold the United States’ secrets aiming to harm the nation. Others believe that he was simply a citizen of the United States who exercised his right to expose the government for their unconstitutional actions. It is important to not only know the two sides to the argument of friend or foe, but to also know the facts as well. My goal in this paper is to present the facts without bias and to adequately portray the two sides of the argument.
The social effects of opiate addiction are felt by those who may have never even seen more than an image of heroin. For example; “In an early study, for example, Inciardi reported that a cohort of 239 male heroin addicts from Miami committed 80,644 criminal acts during the 12 months before being interviewed (Inciardi, 1979).”. (Strain and Stitzer, 2006) In part, this is due to the problems associated with the severe withdrawal symptoms that begin about 18 hours after the last use, and the result that addicts will do almost anything to avoid them. These include sweating, vomiting, insomnia, cold sweats, pain in the limbs, yawning, sneezing, severe bone and muscle aches, diarrhea, stomach cramps
In early 2013 a man by the name of Edward Joseph Snowden began leaking classified National Security Agency (NSA) documents to media outlets, which in turn ended up in public ears. These documents, mainly involving intelligence Snowden acquired while working as an NSA contractor, are mostly related to global surveillance programs run by the NSA. This has raised multiple ethical issues ranging from national security, information privacy and the ethics behind whistleblowing in general. The reach and impact of these leaks have gone global and have put in question the very government that protects us as well as the extent of the public’s rights on privacy. Various foreign
Ever since the American public was made aware of the United States government’s surveillance policies, it has been a hotly debated issue across the nation. In 2013, it was revealed that the NSA had, for some time, been collecting data on American citizens, in terms of everything from their Internet history to their phone records. When the story broke, it was a huge talking point, not only across the country, but also throughout the world. The man who introduced Americans to this idea was Edward Snowden.
“You can't have 100% security and then also have 100% privacy and zero inconvenience. Society had to make choices” said President Obama. It has become a given in society that it is on the government’s agenda to procure its nation’s safety in exchange of the privacy or freedom of the people. Edward Snowden, a paladin of social justice, has now come to light with outstanding facts as for what specifically it is that the National Security Agency (NSA) is able and willing to do for the country’s sake. Snowden, a 29-year-old NSA ex-employee, worked from Hawaii on his computer support for the recollection of data in bulk from the whole nation . Under the name of Verax, which means truth teller in Latin, he
Edward Snowden is a United States citizen and former employee of the National Security Agency (NSA). Snowden leaked information about the NSA to the media in 2013 and is now in Russia where he was recently granted three years of asylum. The NSA uses cryptology and others forms of information gathering to enable various networks to make advantageous decisions for the Nation and our allies under all circumstances. The NSA operates undetected by civilians, and uses global monitoring so broadly defined that it has allowed for unscrupulous behavior that was witnessed by contracted employee, Edward Snowden. Snowden believed that as the public gained knowledge of the illegal intelligence gathering by the government of domestic citizens, and abroad, he would gain protection from the public. Snowden did receive protection from people including powerful lawyers, journalists, and privacy advocates. Analysis of the Edward Snowden case
Over the course of these 2 weeks, I have been conducting my study in trying to lower my blood pressure by changing my diet to intake cholesterol low foods. Hypertension puts stress on your heart and because of the food that we eat with high amounts of cholesterol, our arteries get plugged up and that narrows the artery which increases our blood pressure forcing our heart to work harder. This cardiac disease is one that is widely spread and it’s all because of the diet that we choose to have. I wanted to see what would happen to your blood pressure if you changed your diet. For this project, I have chosen to cut out Fatty meats and as much butter as I can and other food high is saturated fats. One thing I must mention is during this experiment I was eating more soluble fiber such as nuts and
Whistleblowers perform in many careers and are found at all levels of an organization: scientists and secretaries, lawyers and paralegals, managers and staff, security personnel and computer specialists, etc. They are as varied in age, ethnic background, education, profession, sex, and income as the population at large.
