Participating in this course has enlightened me on a lot of information regarding managerial and leadership skills in nursing, such as conflict management skills, performance appraisal, staffing, time management, etc. I’ve realized the relevance of this information as a nurse as I go about my duty as a nurse daily. After reading the assigned article and watching the video on QSEN, I also came across pertinent information which is applicable as a nurse including Patient Centered Care, Team Work and Collaboration, Informatics, Evidenced Based Practice, Quality Improvement and Safety.
My “light bulb moment” after going over the information was the effect of communication on team work and collaboration. Effective communication is an inviolable
The interview was conducted with a registered nurse with more than 10 years’ experience. Her current role is working in the Medical Assessment and Planning Unit, in particular, the palliative care area. On a regular basis, her role involves providing safe and quality care to her patients, and more specifically end of life care. In doing so, two predominant skills of communication
This essay is set to explore the importance of developing effective communication skills in nursing. It will give a short overview on what communication is and what it involves. Then it will explain the importance of effective communication in nursing. Furthermore, the essay will briefly present some challenges surrounding communication in nursing and suggestions on how they can be addressed before it concludes by summarising the needs for nursing students to develop effective communication skills.
Mr. Comer was admitted to his local community hospital for respite care. He has suffered multiple, acute strokes in the past, which has left him with severe disabilities. These include paralysis rendering him immobile, aphasia (speech loss) and dysphagia (swallowing difficulties). He relies on carers for all normal activities required for daily living (Roper et al 1996) and is advised to have a pureed diet and thickened fluids.
This essay will highlight one of the key concepts of nursing .The concept that will be discussed in this essay will be communication, the reason for this chosen concept is that communication plays a vital role in everyday occurrences which defines how a situation is perceived by yourself, others and how communication is effectively handled . Communication is the foundation of exchanging information from one person to another, whether it is in the form of written, spoken or by body language, communicating is vital to everyone. Therefore, effective communication is imperative within the healthcare, for it is through communication relationships, information and understanding are obtained. The purpose of this paper is to read the critical thinking exercise with Nurse Oliver Witte and describe the problems that are presented, whose problems it is? What should Olivia do about it? In addition, I will discuss what mode of communication Olivia is using and in what order should she communicate with first, along with who else needs to be involved with this her communication. Lastly, what type of leadership and management strategies should Olivia use?
It seems ironic that this aspect of nursing is overlooked especially when nurses have so much responsibility to know their skill alongside of working with patience and their families not to mention being a team player with other co-workers. Curtis said in her article, “…clinical leadership is often relegated to a space late in the delivery of nursing education…” (2011, p. 344). However, Curtis also alludes to the problem of leadership training by saying that most often when nursing programs incorporate leadership training into their programs, the training ends up coming from a business approach that is then adapted to clinical leadership. She also indicate that there needs to be more emphasis on leadership training that directly correlates with clinical leadership (2011, p. 346). In addition, Barkhordari-Sharifabad indicates that not equipping nurses with leadership skills results in little to no confidence, commitment and motivation as side effects to the lack of leadership (2017, p. 2). Both of these articles realize the importance of leadership playing an important role in creating an atmosphere that is efficient pleasant, and
This assignment will critique the enhanced communication skills between a registered nurse and service user. For the purpose of this assignment the service user will be referred to as Iris. Confidentiality will be maintained throughout, as stated by the nursing and midwifery council (Nursing and Midwifery Council [NMC], 2015). The physiological assessment being observed was blood pressure and will critique the communication skills, active listening, non-verbal, verbal communication and dignity. Verbal, non-verbal, visual and written communication are the four main types of communication (Boyd & Dare, 2014). During this observation Iris was having her blood pressure taken prior to commencing haemodialysis. Rapid removal of fluid increases the chance of hypotension during and towards the end of dialysis (Cormier, Magat, Hager & Lee, 2012). This is why it is important to monitor Blood pressure before, during and after haemodialysis. I observed Iris’s Blood Pressure being monitored prior to commencing haemodialysis.
Holistic healthcare demands interpersonal collaboration within the nurses and the community for the excellent care of the patient. For example, for a patient suffering from a mental disorder, it is necessary for the nurses to collaborate with each other as well as with the social workers assigned to the patient and his family, which is true if the patient is also a guardian. (Wagner, Liston, & Miller, 2011). The nurses will have to take medical care of the patient while the social worker tends to his social needs such as the welfare of his family. Therefore, it is imperative that the nursing and social work personnel have good communication skills. Communication enhances teamwork that will lead to the caregivers sharing insights and ideas with
It can be hard for nursing students to apply theoretical knowledge to clinical setting without some proper guidance and support. This paper will discuss a critical incident which occurred in Week 3 of my N308 clinical course. The incident was related to skilled communication and organized prioritization, which are topics covered in N307 seminar. From a nursing perspective, this incident made me realize the importance of effective communication, prioritisation, and management skills because disorganized care would pose a threat to patient’s safety and compliance with the fundamental principles listed in the CNA code of ethics (Canadian Nurses Association, 2017).
D-The patient was placed on HOLD and this writer cleared the HOLD. This writer addressed with the patient about her recent AWOL, referring to yesterday. According to the patient, she missed her medcab and did not have any other form of transportation. The patient was in tears as she also reported that she used crack cocaine (smoking) from 8/1/2016-08/4/2016. When asked as to how much she used, she says, " I spent $300 worth......I was doing so good, so good. I didn't want to use. It's too much." This writer asked the patient to what happen recently because during the last individual counseling session, the patient was clean from illicit drugs for a week and 3 days. According to the patient, her son had turned against and lied to her sister
Communication is a process that occurs within physical and social contexts regularly. Whitehead et al (2008. pg. 63) .The aim of this essay is to discuss Communication as a concept of Professional Nursing Practice. Presently, communication is an area of benchmark the government is focusing on to improve the quality of nursing care. The Department of Health [DH] [2001] explained that communication comprises of a number of skills used to promote professional practice. These skills will be identified and used appropriately to promote the health of the patients. The writer will use some of these communication skills to demonstrate the impact on the care nurses provide in line with the NMC
Communication is a means of getting information across from one person to another. However, effective communication is the process of getting information across from one person to another in a way that they will understand our feeling thought and needs. communication is an important tool in health education by which a nurse establishes a relationship with consumer of a health care delivery product or service its effectiveness depend on her ability to convey messages. In a timely and intelligent manner although so many barriers could hinder this communication physical distance to inaccessibility, tradition, semantic barriers, perception, the attitude of the supervisor, levels are barriers to effective communication between a nurse aid and health care consumer.
Lack of effective communication, the absence of attitudes centered on patient safety and inability to work effectively as a team are the major problems that need to be addressed within the scenario. Simmonds (2008) identifies “institutional policies, the ‘culture’ of the unit, and power dynamics existing between members of the health care team” as factors that constrain the ability to effectively advocate for patients from a nursing point of view (p. 363). The inability of the bedside nurse and the physician to discuss, collaborate and agree on a plan of care for the patient were the primary problems that led to secondary medical interventions that included an emergent delivery and subsequent fetal metabolic acidosis.
Management and leadership skills in nursing and other healthcare professions are becoming a more and more widely spoken of subject, as they are essential skills for everyday practice in delivering care (Gopee and Galloway, 2009). Effective management requires the nurse to be able to draw on evidence based knowledge and experience to develop the ability to manage competently during practice. Skills without knowledge, appropriate attitude and understanding will not equate to competency (Watson, 2002).
Oral communication in healthcare is a continuous process and is extremely important for all those involved. Nurses relay relevant information to patients and their family, they are also responsible for updating the physician about the condition of their patients as well as nurse to nurse reporting. This communication is a fundamental part of the nursing process and can result in either quality effective care or ineffective care caused by lack of information. Written communication between the doctors, nurses, patients, and patient families can occur in a number of forms whether handwritten nursing notes or electronic medical records. Both forms are permanent
