The Role of Communication in Healthcare
Communication is “the act or process of using words, sounds, signs or behaviors to express or exchange information; or to express your ideas, thoughts feelings, etc., to someone else” (Merriam-Webster). Ineffective communication can result in negative effects in the operations of a Healthcare organization. This paper sets out to explore all aspects of communication and the hurdles that affect it. Workers are currently overworked, clouding their command of communication skills. Patients are allotted ten to fifteen minutes per appointment. This is not enough time for a patient and physician to have a significant dialogue, especially for those with chronic or multiple illnesses. Much disapproval has been aimed toward health care providers, for their lack of interpersonal communication skills. For patients, time constraints only serve to add to the anxiety, which comes from having to see a doctor. Even the most assertive and highly educated patients are leaving healthcare offices more confused, and feeling overridden by their health professionals. They are holding back concerns and opinions that could impact their care. The majority of malpractice suits are caused by patient-physician communication. Medical professionals are seeing vast improvements, by expanding their communication skills through training sessions with psychiatrists. Susan McDaniel, PhD, a professor of psychiatry and family medicine, has been teaching communication skills to physicians for the majority her career. Keeping in mind to analyze everything from workload pressure, the written and verbal skills of employees, and electronic health records system. Consistent teamwork training can successfully fight the effects of miscommunication. Business writing classes can also help staff sharpen their skills. Also enrolling in a speech class, will give staff members an extra advantage when it comes to communicating. Another way hospitals have improved communication is by role playing, giving staff a chance to hone in on their weaknesses and correct them. In some cases, direct observation occurs, by department chairs. Healthcare organizations must regularly monitor means of communication utilized, and compare the benefits and effectiveness of each. The ineffective means can be discontinued, and those resources can then be reallocated. It is also imperative to keep electronic health records systems up to date, to ensure it is running optimally. Within a health care setting communication is a necessity. Professional Communication is a very important element in the foundation for a strong health care system. Communication can also serve as a basis for basic health care administered. Communication is not only the one tool in health care in which we can control, but also what helps prevent the derailment in patient-healthcare professional trust.. Types of model that can help express how important professional communication is within health care is the movie titled, The Doctor. There are various examples in this movie in which the importance of professional communication is portrayed and supports the argument, as well. These types of examples and supporting data can also be found in real life testimonies of what type of situations can result from lack of professional communication in the health care setting. Communication teaches the importance in human-to-human contact that some hospitals and health care setting may lack due to the certain personality type that is more attracted to the roles of doctors. Professional communication should remain at the forefront of bed side manner and proper etiquette in the health care field and setting.
In the field of health care, communication is essential for proper function in every situation. Poor communication skills can result in perilous and sometimes fatal consequences. Each interaction with coworkers and patients is critical, and effectively communicating is an important means by which quality care is provided. As future health care providers, it is our responsibility to learn to effectively communicate between other providers and patients. Wayfinding shifts were an excellent way to practice effective communication in a health care setting. During my wayfinding shifts, I experienced firsthand the communication process between providers and patients while applying concepts about effective communication with patients and providers.
The ‘Communication cycle’ is a frequently used theory of communication. It was originally established by Charles Berners in 1965. In 1967, a man named Michael Argyle claimed that human communication is essentially a two-way process that involves people sending, and responding to each other’s verbal and non-verbal messages. It was then improved in 1972 by Argyle’s. The model of the ‘communication cycle’ makes it apparent that to ensure effective communication, it has to be a two-way process. As well as transmitting messages to others in a precise way, health care professions must be able to react to both verbal and non-verbal feedback. Therefore, operational communication has to involve determination from both sides in the communication cycle.
Problems with verbal communication in the healthcare setting emerge from the fact that nurses and others in the healthcare setting receive little education on how to communicate effectively with each other.
There are multiple different ways to have effective communication in health care facilities, it is just taking the time to do it that tends to be the hardest part. By taking the time to communicate properly with those around you that are caring for the same patient, it could ultimately be the difference between life and death. Enforcing policies to make sure all health care personnel are effectively communicating by checklists, dry-erase boards, providing monthly staff meetings, briefings, debriefings, and using the SBAR will decrease the number of medical and/or surgical errors
