Her current role is working in the Medical Assessment and Planning Unit, in particular, the palliative care area. An important primary goal of nursing is to facilitate the development of trust and to build upon a therapeutic relationship between the patient and members of the health care team. Demonstrating the skill(s) of effective communication is key. Assessment of a patient’s ability to communicate includes gathering information about the ‘contextual factors’ that influence communication itself. A context includes all the factors that influence the nature of communication and interpersonal relationships. This includes the patient’s internal factors and characteristics (psychophysiological) the nature of the relationship (relational) and the situation prompting communication (situational).

Communication is any form of expressing and receiving of messages between individuals. The importance of Communication in the nursing profession is to maintain high quality care for the patient but also maintain effective collaboration between professionals. Boykins, D (2014) states that the “registered nurse is expected to communicate in various formats and in all areas of practice”. Various formats include speaking to patients and coworkers as well as utilizing appropriate protocols and systems to effectively communicate regards to patient’s status.

The effective of communication is dependent upon numerous factors: age, gender, culture, language barriers, developmental and cognitive level, and willingness. Nurse faces common barriers to communicating with their patient’s every day. As a nurse when we encounter some of these barriers, we should “assess factors that influence the patient and the ability to learn…readiness/willingness to communicate…and patient ability to communicate” (Boykins,2014, p.42). Effective communication involves overcoming these barriers and conveying a clear and concise message.

This essay will highlight one of the key concepts of nursing .The concept that will be discussed in this essay will be communication, the reason for this chosen concept is that communication plays a vital role in everyday occurrences which defines how a situation is perceived by yourself, others and how communication is effectively handled . There will be a definition on what communication is also an evaluation of the chosen concept will be explored throughout this essay.

Communication is complex yet essential to our life and with the different beliefs, ethnicities, and attitudes communication can deteriorate. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the different interdisciplinary methods of patient-clinician communication. This topic is important to me because having the ability to be effective in my communication results in satisfaction, fulfillment, quality, safety, contentment, and peace. I hope to become successful in understand and to beunderstood in my communication. Nurses should want this education to prevent the negative effect that results from the inability to communicate effectively.

As a nurse, communication is an essential and important factor to building a therapeutic relationship between a nurse and patient as it is the difference between average and excellent nursing care, as it helps maintain a good quality of life and allows nurses’ and patients to interact and provide comfort when needed. The importance of good communication can become apparent with patients especially when they are in the hospital, as it helps the nurses build a positive relationship with patients and helps overcome barriers including physical, psychological and social. A therapeutic relationship is built on many factors which include both verbal and non-verbal communication which helps maintains the relationship and strengthens it due to the positive impact it has not only on the patient’s experience but also the nurse’s.

Reflecting on learning the importance of nursing documentation/record keeping and written communication. I recognise it’s one of many skill sets imperative to communicating with others, and needed to be effective in my field. Gaps in communication can be risky to patient’s continuity of care, and can lead to detrimental errors such as incorrect medication dosage or treatments, impinging on their safety. Further breaching the (NMC, 2015, C: 13-16), where it is a requirement to protect the public and patients. Being able to give and receive information is the key to provide effective care to the patient. Positive attitude towards work and sharing information is needed as this will lead in giving quality and satisfying care and promote wellbeing. Therapeutic Communication has a huge impact on patients, whether, we, as nurses, see it or not. It is very important for a nurse to gain a patient’s trust. Many patients are already filled with sadness, nervousness and unsure thoughts of their current situation. Such thoughts may make a person scared to trust or open up to a nurse or doctor. Developing a close rapport with a patient can help to create a safe, warming environment, resulting in a positive experience throughout their time in the hospital or even nursing home. In “Therapeutic Communication”, Anna Lauria opens saying, “What we say or do not say can influence whether a client is able to quiet his mind, relax his body and initiate a healing response” (Lauria). Being a nurse, we automatically have the opportunity to create a strong influence on patients’ lives during, and even after, their hospital experience.

Effective communication is of tantamount importance in the scope of a successful nursing practice. It depends heavily upon both verbal and non-verbal methods (AJN). It is inclusive of both behavioral and speech components. Being efficient in both delivering and receiving messages between the nurse and the patient helps initiate and maintain a healthy relationship. Employing both verbal and non-verbal communication between the nurse and the patient will help ensure that the relationship they share remains satisfying to both parties.
