Proper managerial skills give us the opportunity to lead, supervise, mentor and motivate those around us. “According to Gallup research, only 28% of U.S. employees are engaged, or are actively pursuing top performance on behalf of their organizations” (Michelman, 2008). The ability to manage people effectively in the work setting is shown to make a huge difference to a company 's overall success. Almost a century ago, Henri Fayol, the founder of modern management, developed fourteen principles of management that are still relevant today. They are basic rules used by managers to plan, organize, lead, coordinate, and control production (Robbins, Decenzo, & Coulter, 2015). Since the introduction of Fayol’s theory, management theories have changed their focus from an emphasis on authority and structure to a focus on employees. Today, adapting leadership styles, motivational theories, personality differences, decision-making tools, and effective communication are all important aspects of successful leadership. Leadership Styles Great leaders do not have a one-size fits all mold. However, there are certain qualities that most leaders display. They include focus, decisiveness, passion and confidence in their vision, integrity, honesty and transparency, open-mindedness, and empowerment by delegating authority and responsibility (Bornstein & Bornstein, 2016).
