By taking this course I have come to realize that it is possible to meet the needs of diverse student populations by using well recognized school reform models. Ron Edmonds provides a quote that sums up this course quite nicely: “We can, whenever we choose, successfully teach all children whose schooling is of interest to us. We already know more than we need to do that. Whether or not we do it must finally depend on how we feel about the fact that we haven’t so far” (David Boers, personal communication, April 8, 2011). We have the know-how and means; we just need to take action. The key texts and supplementary materials studied in this class illustrate that improvements are possible, we just need to act. In addition, the results show wide variation in effectiveness among the teachers. The immediate and clear implication of this finding is that seemingly more can be done to improve education by improving the effectiveness of teachers than by any other single factor (as cited in Marzano, 2003, p.72).
Marzano details three teacher-level factors vital to effective teaching: instructional strategies, classroom management, and classroom curriculum design. Marzano provides us with action Sateps at the end of each chapter detailing how we can make the changes necessary to improve education. Interestingly these action steps incorporate many of the principles of the ten standards for teacher development and licensure in Wisconsin. For example “action step 1. Provide teachers with an instructional framework for units that employs research-based strategies” (2003, p85) addresses many of the Wisconsin teacher standards. In chapter 8 Marzano directly addresses standard five “Teachers know how to manage a classroom”(Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction [WDPI], Wisconsin educator standards, 2008) with research supporting classroom management (2003, p88). Marzano is very thorough in supporting his improvement model with research from many sources. The simplicity and organization of his model sets the stage for schools
