According to our textbook, a work team is “a group whose individual efforts result in performance that is greater than the sum of the individual parts” (Judge and Robbins 275). The effectiveness of team-based structures is a much debated topic in the management world. An increasing amount of organizations are switching to this type of structure to gain a competitive advantage in the global market. Advantages of team-based structures include less overhead management, increased productivity, and increased team cohesion. Inversely, team-based structures also present several disadvantages as compared to other models, including a lack of employee motivation, and increased conflicts. In order to truly determine the effectiveness of team-based structures, both the advantages and disadvantages need to be carefully analyzed. According to its proponents, team-based structures are a powerful and effective tool to drive operations and increase productivity. When employees are working in a team, they collaborate amongst each other instead of focusing on their individual achievement. As a result of this collaboration, collective knowledge, experience, and a larger diversity of creative ideas and concepts are brought to the table. Because of these factors, team-based structures are more productive than working individually.
