Animal Testing is the process of experimentation involving using products on non-human animals and recording the reaction on the animal in order to see the effects of a product. Each year over 100 million innocent animals are killed for animal testing. Usually products used on animals will have negative effects that will result in painful effects for the animals. Animal testing is a great advance in medical technology, but hurts the animals that are being tested. Products that are tested on animals could include cosmetics, skincare, cleaning supplies, and household items. Common household items such as Arm & Hammer, Clorox, Comet, Febreze, Glade, Lysol, Tide, and Windex are tested on animals to evaluate the reaction the animals may have. In order for scientists and researchers to test on animals they infect animals with diseases, blind them, poison them, burn their skin, cause brain damage, implant electrodes, and injure or wound them. All of these painful procedures lead to long term suffering, such as social isolation, electric shocks, lack of food and water, repeated breeding, and the separation of infants from mothers. In most studies animals die before the end of their specific study due to the cruel treatment they are given. Many studies also use the process of animal restraining devices the make the animal be still. Cosmetic brands are one of the largest users of animal testing. Carcinogen is the ability to cause cancer in a living tissue. These tests are done orally, inhaled, or applied to the skin over a two-year time period. However, rodents are some of the weakest animals to be used when being studied for carcinogenicity because they are more prone to cancer than humans. The Dermal Penetration or skin absorption tests are tested on rodents such as rats. This test examines the movement of a chemical within the skin and through the bloodstream. The rat is killed after the chemical is given and the amount of absorption the chemical gave to the animal is estimated. The skin absorption test is also quite unreliable because of the differences in the skin structures of rodents and humans. The Neurotoxicity tests examines if a substance causes changes to the nervous system. This test is done by giving rats daily doses of the substance being testing for either 28 days, 90 days, or one year. Then the rats are looked at and observed for physical behavioral changes. They are then killed at the end of the period of time they were to be
