Effect of cryotherapy on pain management at puncture site of arterio-venous fistula among hemodialysis children
This study examined the effect of cryotherapy on pain management at puncture site of arterio-venous fistula among hemodialysis children. The findings indicate that this intervention was associated with significant decreases in both subjective and objective parameters of pain measurement. These results lead to acceptance of the stated research hypotheses.
According to the present study results, the application of cryotherapy before arterio-venous fistula puncture led to significant decreases in the scores of subjective pain as measured by the Wong-Baker faces pain scale. These findings reflect children’s genuine feeling of pain, which may be variable from one child to another depending on personal factors and previous experience as pointed out by Savino et al (2013) in their study in Italy. Although the Wong-Baker faces pain scores were affected by age and previous venipuncture, these authors still recommended its use in research.
In agreement with our findings, Mansy et al (2010), in their study in @@, compared the effectiveness of cold application in pain relief among children. They reported significantly lower mean pain scores among children in the intervention group (2.33+2.294) compared with the control group (6.13+2.36). On the same line, Çelik et al. (2011), in their randomized clinical trial study in Turkey, reported significant decreases in the
