Alcohol has been around in our country for thousands of years. The legal drinking age is twenty-one in some parts of the United States. This requirement makes it illegal for any minor to purchase alcohol or even drink it. In some states like Virginia, South Carolina, and South Dakota, the legal drinking age for beer and wine is eighteen, but liquor can not be consumed by a person until they are twenty-one. Alcohol consumption by minors is often looked down upon in our society. Maybe this should not be the case though. Our government should lower the drinking age to eighteen, because minors drink regardless of the law, there will be fewer drinking and driving fatalities, and the law states that once an individual reaches the age of eighteen, …show more content…
Many teenagers and young adults drink and drive because they often drink in secluded and irresponsible environments where they are allowed to leave in vehicles, even while under the influence. This has caused an incredibly large amounts of horrific wrecks, many of which claimed the lives of teenagers and young adults. Also, the majority of alcohol related injuries are not even caused by underage adults. There are also countries who have fewer alcohol related wrecks, even though the legal drinking age is eighteen in these countries. By lowering the legal drinking age many underge adults would not have to drive to such secluded and irresponsible locations. Underage adults could consume alcohol in locations where driving under the influence could be prevented. By preventing under the influence driving, many vehicular accidents could be prevented and lives could be potentially …show more content…
Because the law states this, and even states that a person of the age of eighteen can also be arrested and charged as an adult in a court of law, eighteen year old adults should have the right to decide for themselves whether to drink or not, like adults. Since people of the considered age are adults by law, then why should they not be able to act out as adults? Alcohol should be no different. People from the ages of eighteen to twenty should be able to buy alcohol because the society we live in starts to accept these people as adults years before the legal drinking limit of twenty-one. One might could argue that this is somewhat unfair to a specific age of individuals. Does it not makes sense that if an individual is accepted and qualified by law as an adult, that he/she should be able to participate in all adult activities? This is yet another reason why the legal age to purchase alcohol should be lowered.
In conclusion, these reasons are just a few of why the legal age should be lowered. Most individuals would agree that responsible drinking should definitely be practiced anywhere that drinking occurs, while many people believe that individuals under the age of twenty-one or incapable of drinking responsible. The reasons listed in this passage will hopefully persuade individuals
In conclusion by lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18 years of age, more positive outcomes exist than negative ones. A lower drinking age will allow for those of age to have a chance to learn a better sense of responsibility, decrease alcohol related incidents and provide several health benefits. As a legal adult those between the ages of 18 and 21 deserve the right to make the decision of whether they would like to participate in the consumption of alcohol or
When people turn eighteen they are finally considered an adult. They can join the army, vote, buy cigarettes or tobacco products, get a tattoo and even die for our country. Although everyone considers that person to be an adult, they are still not old enough to buy or consume alcohol. A person can be responsible enough to live on their own, make their own money, pay their own bills, and yet they are still not considered old enough to purchase or consume any type of alcohol. Lowering the drinking age to 18 would help prevent the crime and personal injuries that are caused by alcohol abuse.
In the United States, 18-year-olds are considered adults. They can vote, get married and get a license for a gun yet they are not allowed to drink. Many people think that the drinking age should be 18, but others strongly believe it should be 21 for doing all kinds of things. Drinking in the United States has become a controversy for the drinking age; 18 or 21. There are many reasons why the drinking age should stay the same and many of why it should be 18. Even though many Americans think that people under 21 do not have the capacity to handle drinking, in my opinion, drinking age should be lowered from 21 to 18 because teenagers at the age of 18 can make important decisions, so drinking should be a decision they can too decide whether to
Throughout history drinking and the drinking age has been a controversial topic. There have been many criticisms regarding the drinking age, many of which have some valid points. Some of which believe there should be no drinking age others believe drinking should be banned. The United States government passed a law in 1984 restricting persons under the age of 21 from purchasing alcohol. Brain growth, body growth, and maturity are all factors when looking at why the drinking age is 21. We should also consider the upside of no legal drinking age less abuse, more tax revenue, tradition.
The government is conducting an idea to whether lower the minimum legal drinking age in the United States or not. Many Americans forbid the idea of legalizing the drinking age so that it would be profitable to the businesses. Likewise, there have been many advantages and disadvantages of why should the government allow young adults drink under the age of 21. To prevent this issue, many Americans have provided reasoning that will support the idea of keeping the minimum legal drinking age where it is now. The government should maintain the minimum legal drinking age in the United States at the age of 21.
There has been a debate on lowering the drinking age from twenty-one to eighteen. There are many reasons why this policy should not be passed. At the age of eighteen in the United States one is considered as an adult to make there own decisions, vote, and are allowed to buy Tabaco. Drinking is not one of them. Studies have shown that there are scientific reasons this should not happen. First drinking can be very harmful to the body, causing severe symptoms. Second the drinking and driving rate would increase. Finally, eighteen year olds are not as mature as twenty-one year olds. They are not as fully developed as twenty-one year olds. All of these are factors that contribute to why the drinking age should not be lowered.
I believe that the drinking age should be lowered to the age of 18. I took this stance in my health class debate last year and it was a success. There are many reasons why the drinking age should be lowered that I will discuss in this paper. These reasons are very convincing and should be considered by the government. I will also look into what action is being taken on decreasing the yearly amount of DUI’s.
Once a person reaches the age of 18, they are allowed to tattoo their bodies, smoke tobacco, gamble and even enlist if they wanted to! As an adult, they want to be treated as one but how can they feel like an adult if hanging around with their friends and drinking beer while watching TV is illegal? Of course, that does not stop them, though. The United States is one of the few countries in which still have such a high minimum drinking age. Although most people think young adults (18-year olds) are irresponsible, the minimum drinking age should be lowered to 18 because they deserve to be recognized as adults in order to avoid illegal, uncontrolled drinking and other illegal actions.
The drinking age should be lowered to eighteen because there has been many problems that have caused life threatening dangers to these teens. The age eighteen is where you start to become an adult so people should have the right to drink when they turn eighteen (“Drinking Age”). It also should be allowed
Changing the drinking age has multiple negative effects. However, it could have a few positive effects on society. First, it would allow law enforcement to crack down on other crimes being committed in cities. Ultimately resulting in a lowering of the crime rate. (Even though only around every two of one thousand underage drinking occasions result in an arrest (Daniloff)). Secondly, lowering the drinking age would allow the government to receive more taxes off of the sales of alcohol. Since around seventeen and a half percent of alcohol sales (or $22.5 billion) end up being consumed by minors the government could place a higher tax upon sales to citizens ages eighteen to twenty-one (The Debate).
A very controversial argument amongst Americans is determining that the current legal drinking age which is 21 should be lowered to eighteen or not. Researching the following propaganda made me understand the dangers to the youth and people in America if the drinking age were to lower. Therefore i will argue with whoever disagrees with me that the drinking age should be lowered.
In the United States an individual that is eighteen has the privilege to buy tobacco, a house, get married, enlist in the military and vote. When turning eighteen one can also work in a bar but cannot legally drink. The legal drinking age for the United States is twenty-one, but illegally individuals start drinking as young as ten years old. According to Kirsty Hughes “most people have their first taste of alcohol around the age of 10” while Casswell “reports it to be at age 7”. From 1176-1919 the United States didn’t have a legal drinking age. For nearly 750 years there was no age restrictions on who could drink and who couldn’t ( Tietjen July 17th, 2014 p.2). Throughout the United States now, the legal drinking age it twenty-one, prohibiting
Almost everyone can agree that alcohol should not be given or allowed to children or young adults under a certain age. Alcohol is a substance that is very dangerous and if you used incorrectly or immaturely the consequences can be great danger to the users or the ones around them. The topic of lowering the drinking age has been in discussion for many decades. “Between 1970 and 1976, 29 states lowered their age for drinking alcohol. The results were catastrophic. Highway deaths among teenagers and young adults skyrocketed. Almost immediately, states began raising the minimum drinking age again.” “In 1984, Congress passed the Uniform Drinking Age Act, which required states to have a minimum drinking age of 21 for all types of alcohol
Many under the age of 21 are getting in trouble with the law in alcohol related incidents, which wouldn?t take place if the drinking age was lowered. Many underage drinkers drink in more dangerous places in order to avoid law enforcement. "... when these young adults ?drink on the sly in unsupervised settings, they are
Over the course of the last few decades, the discussion of whether the drinking age should remain at 21 or should be lowered has become a very controversial topic. While there are some doubts on lowering the drinking age to 18, there are many pros as to why we should keep the drinking age at 21, especially in an underage drinking environment. The discussion will move from the possibilities of alcohol abuse and its percusion, to the loopholes the laws and legislations concerning the use of alcohol and the minimum legal age. The conflict between lowering the drinking age and favoring the change also can cause a possible set back to trying to lower the drinking age.
