Do you recall your way of living preceding the invention of the Internet? Can you remember how you drew out necessary information concerning studies, weather patterns, or directions? More pressing, how did you have access to the where-abouts and status’ of your closest four hundred friends? While social networking has become an essential tool in modern day life, our dependence on the Internet has proven itself flawed in that it leads to the increase of adolescences’ diagnosed with depression. An ever increasing number of studies has examined this phenomenon in search of a correlation between social networking and depression in children maturing into adulthood. According to Guralnik (1984), depression is defined as “a psychoneurotic or psychotic disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal tendencies.” (p.395). A social network is an online interaction service which manages to construct communities and connect them with shared interests (Boyd & Ellison, 2007). Social networking sites such as Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter attract millions of users who have incorporated these networks into their daily practices. Some of these sites cater to diverse viewers while others integrate people based on similarities such as a shared language or nationality. Last year, Facebook passed an average of 1.23
We tend to idolize people’s lives based on how happy they seem to appear on social media then believe we must act the same way. With one popular social network, Facebook, gives people the ability to stay connected and share with their friends/family. Having a Facebook page is now an expected part of being online. This online website is surprisingly causing young adults to feel sad,
Social Networking Sites (SNS) are most popularly used today on the Internet. SNS such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook are one of the most common social interactive sites used by adolescents. Connecting with friends, expressing oneself, and scrolling through personal profiles has never been easier before. Depending how SNS are used, it can play a huge role in the daily lives of many. According to Hugues (2015), SNS have been used to cope with loneliness and depression, boost self-esteem and well-being, and gain social status. Hugues studied the correlation between the total time spent on SNS and “unmet need for mental health support, poor self-rated mental health, and reports of psychological distress and suicidal ideation.” (Hugues,
This paper will take a look at the research that has been conducted in the field of mental health as it relates to the use of social networking sites. Multiple literary works will be used to give the reader a comprehensive and accurate look at how the use of social networking sites can have both positive and negative effects on an individual’s mental and psychological health on an elementary level.
Wouldn’t you say that online social networking has changed the way society interacts with friends, family and perfect strangers. When someone exposes themselves to these sites, they open the door to allow these people into their lives. Some of them you would have passed on the street and not even thought of befriending. These people you have chosen to interact with, whether they are in your city, another state, another country or just someone you met online have now become a part of your circle. This form of communication will eventually turn their social interaction into non-existence. Social networking has a negative effect on society impacting physical interaction with people.
Robert Kraut, a researcher from Carnegie Mellon University found, in a study he conducted in 1998, that when people use the Internet for extended amounts of time they tend to feel lonelier and more depressed. In a different study, The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families, researchers found that teens suffering from “Facebook depression” are at a higher risk for developing depressive tendencies such as social isolation. They are also more likely to turn to sites and blogs like Tumblr for “help.” However those sites promote destructive behaviors like substance abuse, unsafe sex and cutting. Many investigators have speculated reasons for why social media may cause depression in young adults. Brandon H. Hidaka, B.A., states that the rise is attributed to a new cultural emphasis on superficial goals like money, relationship statuses, and appearance. On social media teens are able to put out their best qualities. People who use social media put their best foot forward: their best pictures and statuses of success. To onlookers it may seem that these teenagers have perfect lives. Social media platforms have made it easier for young adults to compare themselves and their lives to others and demoralize themselves. Those habits are self-destructive and dangerous to teens
For this research proposal, I would study the link between social networking site Facebook and depression among older adolescents around the age of 18 and 20. For this proposal, I will look at four scholarly articles, proposal three research questions and have three hypotheses for my research questions based on how social networking sites like Facebook use correlates with a decrease in mood and increase in depression.
I am going to talk about the impacts of social networking sites on our professional life. Social networking sites were built to connect people across oceans and deserts, by the way making communication easier. As days passed, Social networking sites stepped into professional life’s of people. As the coin always has two sides, Social networking is going to have both positive and negative impacts in our professional life.
According to Clay Shirky (2008), “Our social tools are not an improvement to modern society; they are a challenge to it’’ (P. 107). From my experience and reading, the social networking websites harm our society as it takes away the need for humans from interacting face to face as this weakens family ties. Most people think that the social networking websites do us more good, but I am of the view that the social networking websites do us more harm than good. We have come across statements such as “I am considering disconnecting the Internet connection at home since it is affecting the performance of my children who keep face booking and chatting most of the time instead of reading” (Baron-Cohen, 2010, p. 8). Also, we hear that the Arab Spring was aided by the social networking websites such as face book and tweeter.
Throughout the years, our society has experienced dramatic change due to technological advances. Technology has become a vital part of our everyday lives that has greatly influenced the way we interact with each other and our environment. Through the development of social networking, it has easily kept us updated on what is going on around the world and in other people’s lives. Instead of face-to-face communication, the younger generation perceives social media to be a place to share emotional connections and stay connected with their significant other. The aim of this research is to investigate the effects of online social networking constructing romantic relationships. With the many different ways to interact with your significant other through social networking, it has altered the hookup culture as well as the authenticity and social value of relationships through time, distance and space. Through this notion, it is proven that social networking sites can have both negative and positive aspects upon a relationship. However, how does social media and romantic relationships among teenagers and young adults lead to the notion of stress? How does the lack of face-to-face interaction affection a relationship? With the development of social media applications such as Tinder, Bumble, Facebook etc., how has it affected what defines authenticity of relationships? These are a few questions that raise concern for people that engage with these social networks.
“Like all revolutions, the social networking revolution is accompanied by concerns and questions about whether the changes have wrought something better or something worse.” (Szumski and Karson ¶ 4) The social networking revolution has come a long way in its accessibility and effectiveness and has become a great resource for many people. But with its benefits come more serious downfalls that need to be acknowledged and dealt with. While social networking can be used as a clear, accessible source, for communication, social networking also has several negative effects on a person in ways such as socially, mentally, and physically; by limiting internet time, restricting the accessibility, and monitoring what kids are doing, social networking
Social media like Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat are few examples of modern technology and are used by billions of people around the globe. Today social networking sites playing important role in our life. However the use, may be excessive use, of Facebook might be harmful to us to some extent. A study conducted by University of Michigan researchers claimed that “Facebook causes depression”(Kross 2). Facebook use predicts declines in subjective well-being instead of enhancing it. It is generally believed that socialization is good for psychological health. In fact this is true subject to some pre-set criteria. But socialization through Facebook is harmful. The study is the first published research that examined influence of Facebook on young adults. The focus was how happy they are and how satisfied with their lives over time. They researchers claimed that the more people used Facebook during one time period, the worse they subsequently felt. On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection. Rather than enhancing well-being, however, these findings suggest that Facebook may undermine it.

Social networking websites (further referred to as SNS) are web based platforms in which people connect to other individuals that they already have a real-life connection to, locate individuals they have shared interests with, and they allow users to share information with others such as photographs, life events and thoughts. Being able to keep current with one 's personal group quickly and easily is one of the reasons SNS have become so mainstream (McKensie 436). The ability to communicate to a wide audience in real time has its benefits, such as maintaining friendships with people one would have otherwise lost contact with, giving shy people the ability to interact with others without feeling overwhelmed, and constructing new relationships with peers.

Envision the year 2000 - six years prior to thought of Twitter turned into a reality, four years prior to Mark Zuckerberg dispatched Facebook from his school quarters, three years prior MySpace was changed over to bolster the thought of long range informal communication. The prospect that individuals may some time or another spend more than 700 billion minutes for every month on a solitary site, for example, Facebook was unimaginable. These long range informal communication locales alongside hundreds more were only a flash in creators ' brains.
