Sports-related activities pose a huge risk to individuals, particularly if there are concussions or brain injuries. Denke (2008) suggests that sports concussions are a consequence of repeated head traumas which can have a severe impact on the overall performance of an individual’s body. In most cases, athletes (boxers, football, hockey, basketball players, etc.) are the most vulnerable to concussions. With this in mind, some of the severe effects of concussions can result in permanent damages that will hinder the person from functioning well. In medical terminology, dual-task paradigm is referred as a procedure that requires an individual to do two tasks at the same time, and is a method used to assess a person’s central executive function (Sala, Baddeley, Papagno, & Spinnler, 1995). According to Baddeley (1992), central executive component is associated with a person’s attention control system. These tests revealed that ice hockey players who had a history of sports-related injury had implications on dealing with more than one task at the same time. Their findings suggest that hockey players’ dual tasking capabilities drastically decreased. Moreover, a person’s brain is a very sensitive organ, so any serious movements can cause internal damage. It is known for a fact that the frontal lobes of the brain are associated with a person’s speech production, attention, concentration, and motivation. Since the frontal lobe is located in front of the brain and at the top of the skull, a person’s frontal lobes are the most vulnerable regions and are likely to suffer from injuries in head contact sports (Baillargeon, Lassonde, Leclerc, & Ellemberg, 2012). The research studies conducted may explain the relatively strong association between the affected area in the injury and the consequences in performing and concentrating on two tasks.

On the morning of December first of two thousand and twelve, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher took a .40 caliber gun and shot his girlfriend 22 times inside his master bedroom. He then drove down to Arrowhead Stadium, the Chief’s home stadium, to express his appreciation to his team’s general manager and coach for everything they had done for him, walked away, and then shot himself in the head. This tragic recollection of the murder-suicide case executed by the 25 year old football player paints him as a monstrous and willfully violent man but what if one was to acclaim all of these fatal incidents to too many bumps in the head? Well it has been. Years after this incident, after medical examiners conducted an autopsy on Belcher and they found that his brain showed signs of CTE, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a disease caused by repetitive traumatic head injuries, also denoted as concussions. There have been many documented cases where after contact sport athletes experience excessive concussions, they then seem to develop a seemingly new character as they come to be ill fully violent, overtly aggressive, or even deeply depressive. Many times this may lead to the diagnosis of a mental disorder or may end tragically, as in Belchers case, in the death of others and/or the athletes themselves.
Lastly, having multiple concussions produce long term effects on athletes. This was proven by a study performed that compared athletes with a history of concussions to athletes with no concussion history using a concussion test known as: Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT). This is a computerized test that measures memory capabilities to determine if an athlete has a concussion. It was taken by the athletes prior to their season to find a baseline level. This baseline would then be used to determine if someone has a concussion by comparing it to a post-concussion result of the ImPACT. Today, multiple leagues and professionals are learning how to prepare and prevent these career shattering injuries. Studies show that retired professional football players showed a three-fold increase in depression in players with a history of three or more concussions (Cifu). Evidence has also been gleaned from other sports that involve head impact. Nonrandomized studies of soccer players who have had multiple minor concussions have demonstrated that these individuals performed worse on neuropsychological tests compared with a control group (Neuropsychological testing is the standard for monitoring cognitive recovery after a concussion) (Cifu).
More than 300,000 sports-related concussions are reported each year in the United States, and although the awareness of concussions and other head injuries is rising, concussions are still very dangerous to young athletes. Some may say that after an athlete receives a concussion, they just have to wait until the obvious, and most common symptoms like dizziness and nausea subside before they can play again; with medication, and constant rest, this may only take 2 weeks, however, depending on the severity of the injury, there could be some other underlying symptoms that are even more dangerous than the obvious ones. Concussions have affected many athletes and even normal people and too many concussions could end up having serious consequences later on in life. Sports leagues and doctors should be taking more precaution in making sure everyone stays safe and healthy.

Now nothing but that white jersey laying motionless on the turf matters to you. Trainers then EMT’s rush over. They put a brace on his neck, his body on a stretcher and rush him off the field. If an athlete was to be impacted on the head on the playing field and was to gain a concussion they should sit out until they are able to fully recover. During the time period after one concussion athletes are more vulnerable to gain another. If a player were to get another concussion during this time period, permanent brain damage may be evident in the future. Also, If the player doesn't let their concussion heal properly it may lead to permanent brain damage in the future.
Concussions can have severe effects on an athlete. They can lead depression, memory loss, and event death. However, with growing research, it is possible to take preventative measures, identify the likelihood of a concussion and engage in treatment. Undiagnosed concussions can lead to more severe injuries and athletes should be concerned about, aware of them and treat them.
