Situation According to the Society of Radiographers (2016) Imaging staff have an important role in health promotion as they are well placed to influence patients’ choices regarding their medical and lifestyle choices. Osteoporosis is the most common disease of the bone and the incidence of this condition is rising. Osteoporosis is estimated to effect 3 million people in the UK. A decreasing bone density in patient, especially in those above the age of 50, leads to bones becoming weak and therefore, there is an increased likelihood of fragility fractures. This condition is preventable and treatable however, it is often left undiagnosed and therefore, has major cost implications on the NHS. (National Osteoporosis Society, 2013a) The…show more content…
(International Osteoporosis Foundation, 2015) Current UK wide initiatives include the National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) which is a charity based organisation which campaigns to inform, improve and implement policies and prioritise Osteoporosis within national healthcare (National Osteoporosis Society, 2014). Additionally, the NOS has devised an Osteoporosis Agenda for Scotland with recommendation for improvement of services, policy, audit and awareness (National Osteoporosis Society, 2015). Other smaller initiatives include, NHS Health Scotland and Age Scotland which provide information to promote healthy lifestyles and preventative measures (SIGN, 2015). Aim This intervention aims to raise public awareness of Osteoporosis and inform patient of preventative measure that can be taken to reduce the likelihood developing the condition, especially with regards to dietary needs. Intervention A cookbook featuring recipes that contain high levels of calcium and vitamin D that have been recommended by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (2015). This 20 page booklet is aimed to inspire women who are attending a radiography department to re-create these recipes at home and by doing so, increasing their awareness of the condition and improve and their dietary habits.
