The SAT’s prove to be a harmful to a student’s future, especially when they start looking for jobs. The SAT’s do not teach the skills needed to function on the job, and hinder the creativity needed on the job. The SAT’s also divide people into “high-scored” and “low-scored”, which excludes people from certain jobs, even though they might have the qualifications for that job. Both these reasons cause a student to not receive the job they may deserve. But there are ways to reverse this epidemic. Colleges may implement a different admissions process; one that judges a student on more than their academic power. These problem solving skills are useless on the job because most of the skills needed on the job do not involve the skills needed for the SAT. Gerald Bracey, a writer for Phi Delta Kappan, said in a April 2001 issue that a “an increase in math test scores of one standard deviation has been associated with 3% to 4% difference in wages” (p.637). This proves that even if you do well on the SAT, that barely helps in increasing wages. All of the skills that were taught to get that test score up are useless since the score will barely affect the advancement a student has in a job. Most jobs, for example, do not need the skills to write an essay in twenty-five minutes. In the real world, people have more time to craft their writing. Writing a essay in twenty-five minutes prohibits students from writing creatively. This creativity is what is needed to problem solve and critically think in the real world. The SATs divide the population into “high-score” and “low-score” individuals, or people that have high scores on the SAT’s and people who don 't have high scores on the SAT’s.
