What are the effects of xenophobia on South African society?
Tentative Thesis
The effects of xenophobia on South African society are devastating. Xenophobia causes tension between citizens and immigrants, causes displacement of thousands and even loss of life. It also undermines the fragile relationships and trust between the foreigners and citizens. It violates what our country stands for (democracy and equality to all) by not treating immigrants as equals especially when they need basic services from the government. The immigrants also present xenophobic actions towards citizens of South Africans by using derogatory terms and calling them names. The Impact of Xenophobia on Refugees and Asylum Seekers in South Africa
This source gives an overview of xenophobia in South Africa and the effects that xenophobia has on the immigrants to the country. The main effects of the xenophobic violence on the immigrants is that they are reminded of/re-experience the conditions of their original country from which they fled. Their belongings are looted and their “homes” (shacks) are destroyed, they are called derogatory names and are not treated equal, they battle to gain access to public services (banking and electricity) and even families are separated in the violence and it even sometimes ends in death of innocent people.
This source helps contribute to answering the main research question about how xenophobia effects immigrants to South Africa, by providing the struggles of an immigrant to South Africa and some of the violence they experience due to being foreign.
