Global warming and the greenhouse effect are issues discussed by scientists all the time. A natural process that keeps earths temperature at a livable rate is called the greenhouse effect. The energy from the sun warms up the earth when the rays from the sun are absorbed by greenhouse gasses. The gasses then become trapped in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane and nitrous oxide are the most common greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gases cause the radiant heat of the sun to be trapped in the Earths lower atmosphere which causes global warming. If there weren't any greenhouse gasses, the earth would be really cold due to very little sun rays being absorbed on the earth. Global warming can and will lead to several …show more content…
Warm weather and rainy weather that brings out storms, devastating storms. There were over 500 deaths during Chicago's 1995 heat wave. (Heat Wave-Global Fever) This instability in the weather causes lots of problems for everyone. Plant life will have to adjust to the greater amounts of rain. Plants migrate naturally, but scientists think that global warming could make the plant life migrate at a much faster rate. If the plants migrate at a faster rate they then will need a larger area to live in. Scientists predict that the average annual temperature will rise by 3 degrees Celsius by the middle of the next century. (Salmon hot water) That 3 degrees will be doubled by the year 2100. Scientists think that when the Earths temperature rises 6 degrees more than what it is now, glaciers will be melting at a high rate. With the melting of the glaciers this will make the sea level rise. "Sea level rise could lead to flooding of low-lying property, loss of coastal wetland, erosion of beaches, saltwater contamination or drinking water, and decreased longevity of low lying roads, causeways and bridges. At Long Bay, sea level already is rising by approximately 2 inches per century, and it is likely to rise another 12 inches by 2100." (North Carolina) Global warming wont only affect the rise of sea level it will also affect sea life. Corals will die because they aren't used to warmer temperatures. The small increase in the temperature will kill
Rising sea level can be caused by a variety of factors and can have an effect or influence even more. Future changes in sea level may impact human populations around the world and many other aspects of life on Earth more than many initially thought. The U.S. coast of the Gulf of Mexico is on track to be one of the most impacted by further sea level rise and the outcome could be detrimental to the entire coastline.
Documented scientific evidence exists that earth is warming and that, in fact, it has warmed 1° Fahrenheit (0.56° Celsius) in the last decade, mostly due to an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide caused by the burning of fossil fuels. While one degree may not seem all that significant the fact is that such an increase has had an impact on global sea levels due to the melting of Arctic, Antarctic and Greenland Ice. The Antarctic Larsen Ice Sheet has collapsed. Ironically the collapse of the Larsen Ice Shelf actually occurred after it had been written into the movie. Greenland 's ice sheet is predicted to melt if global temperatures rise by 5.4° Fahrenheit (3° Celsius), resulting in a sea level rise of 23 feet (7 meters).
Rising temperatures are causing melting glaciers, which cause rising oceans. Rising oceans will envelop entire coastal cities, killing or displacing millions of people. Our food sources will dwindle; entire species of animals will become extinct as we destroy their homes to rebuild; and as our population skyrockets, an unimaginable number of humans will be left homeless, starving, and sick.
The Sea Level has increased over the past 200 years as average global temperatures have increased. The rise is due to two factors, the freshwater being added to the oceans from ice melt in the cryosphere, and the thermal expansion of the oceans due to rises in sea temperature. The sea level has risen 6 to 8 inches in the past 100 years. It is predicted to rise another 50 to 90 centimeters in the next century. As the sea level rises it’s jeopardizing rapidly growing coastal communities, which causes evacuation in some areas causing people to lose their homes. Sea level is the effect
After watching National Geographic’s videos on global warming and learning about it though other supplementary mediums provided I can certainly agree global warming is a growing problem, that needs to be seriously addressed. Although it may not be a threat at the current moment, global warming will become a serious problem that we as a planet will not be able to control or reduce if we do not act now. It truly terrifies me that future generations may not be able to enjoy everything this wonderful earth has to offer because of global warming. For example, on page 97 in “Intro to geophagy” by Dahlman Renwick it states how global warming will result in rising sea levels. “Rising sea level presents threats to low-lying coastal areas.” If sea levels
Another factor of ascending sea levels is the increase in temperatures (3). Eissa and Zaki implies that “a considerable number of many species will be threatened with a continuous increase in sea levels to a certain point that the animal or species could become extinct” (The impact of global climatic…” 2). Sea levels are rising at very accelerated rates, and until the water keep rising, they will become very harmful to the human population and many marine organisms. However, increasing temperatures is one of the main factors of climate change. Johansen insists that “the warming of the world’s oceans has not only affected the animals who live above the surface, but also the ones who live below” (“Marine Life…” 1). Increasing temperatures are mostly caused by many human activities such as the release of fossil fuels emissions and greenhouse gases. The two main processes that cause increasing temperatures are Climate Change and the Greenhous effect. These can be very harmful to the marine population and permanently extinct them. According to recent studies, NOAA has discovered that seawater temperatures are increasing by about 0.1 Celsius, and many organisms confronted with this change could be in great danger (NOAA 2). In addition to increasing temperatures and sea levels rising, another factor would be ocean acidification. Global Issues portrays that” ocean acidification is caused by substantial amounts of carbon dioxide which is caused by greenhouse emissions” (Climate
The issue is that the sea water levels are rising as a result of warming oceans caused by climate change. The burning of fossil fuels has put lots of “greenhouse gases” such as methane into our atmosphere, causing more heat to be retained on the earth from the sun and overall warming the earth. The oceans absorb about 80 percent of the excess heat. Thermal Expansion is in effect as the sea levels rise. Polar ice caps and glaciers are melting due to global warming which is adding to the rising sea level. (National Geographic, 2017)
Sea-level rise is one of the most significant effects of climate change. As global temperatures rise, ice in the polar-regions will continue to melt, dumping tons of additional water into the ocean. Warmer water temperatures will also lead the oceans to expand high projected rates of future sea-level rise. “These factors will cause sea levels to increase and swamp coastal areas all over the world” (Oceans and Sea Level Rise). Particularly, countries which are located in low-lying areas as well as islands, are concerned that their land areas would be decreased due to inundation and coastal erosion and, at worst, a large proportion of their population may be forced to migrate to other countries. Although flooding is an obvious consequence of rising sea levels, there are numerous other effects to consider. The current rising sea levels due to global warming are effecting the environment in a number of ways. (Oceans and Sea Level Rise)
Decades of research suggest that sea-levels are rising, and will continue to rise as a result of climate change. This rise will have the most immediate and significant impact on
The negative effects of this rise is frightening, and may start effecting the planet very soon. When the planet warms, glaciers, and polar ice caps melt causing a rise in sea level. The melting of glaciers also removes many people of their clean water because 80% of all the people on Earth depend on the run-off from glaciers. The rise in sea level floods coast lines, destroying homes and buildings along the coast, and filling streets with water. This will force humans to have more densely populated cities that may become so overpopulated that diseases may start to spread quickly. With the water shortage and the extreme heat, deaths by dehydration and disease will become more common. If people don’t start to take action to reduce global warming, that could soon become the world we live in.
Global warming is an increase in the temperature of the earth's weather. Global warming is also known as the green house effect. Global warming is a very serious world issue. Most humans are trying to do as much as they can to help stop global warming. Global warming has caused many problems to the earth in addition to the humans that live here on the earth. A problem caused by global warming is very hot summers. Some summers have had days that the temperature had reached 30*C. Another Problem that global warming has caused is the melting of polar ice caps. Global warming caused the polar ice caps to melt which will cause the ice to break free as well as melt in the sea, sea levels all over the world will rise. Lastly,
The effects of global warming touch every human, animal, plant, ocean, landmass, and atmosphere level on this planet. The numerous effects of global warming are mixes of "good" and "bad" results, depending on how your definition of "good" results and "bad" results are. A "good" effect, a person could say, would be for regions with normally cold temperatures to receive warmer temperatures for their normal. Yet, there are more "bad" effects that seem to out weight the "good" effects. Some of the effects would include increases of flooding, severe storm systems, and rising sea-levels. One major consequence would be an increase of temperature globally. This would
Imagine you are placed into the future. The year is 2100. You begin to live in this
One of the most serious effects of global warming, as it continues to intensify, is the increase in the ocean levels. Thermal expansion of the ocean and glacial melting are likely to cause a .5 to 1.5 meter rise in the ocean level by the year 2100. As the ocean level rises and if no protection is provided, many freshwater supplies could be jeopardized. Tens and possibly hundreds of millions of
Global sea level rise is potentially one of the biggest problems that the human race will face in the foreseeable future. Significant rise in sea level could be disastrous for low lying coastal areas in New Zealand and all across the globe as people’s homes and livelihoods would be destroyed. There are two main factors that cause global sea level rise, they are: Thermal expansion of the ocean and melting of ice on land such as glaciers and ice sheets in polar regions. Both of these major causes are driven by climate change (warming in particular)2.
