Indian cuisine encompasses a wide variety of foods from all over. Given the range of diversity in soil type and climate, these cuisines vary significantly from each other. They also try and use locally available spices, vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Indian food is also heavily influenced by religious and cultural choices and traditions. In Western India the climate is tropical wet and dry, and has a lot of deserts and coast lines. This region produces barley, wheat, corn, fish and coconut milk. In Northern India the climate is a temperate climate, though cool winters, hot summers and moderate monsoons are the general pattern. Buddhism is another prevalent religion in India and shares many of the same beliefs with Hindus, as such, many Buddhist are vegetarians.
India was also an important trade route between Asia, China, and Middle East. This brought about new foods such as spinach, almonds, cumin, okra, and rosewater. Portugal is another country that was an important trader with India. They brought over potatoes, cashews, kidneys beans, and various types of chiles, which are used in curries. Once the British Empire entered the Indian trade route, and took over, tea and silverware was introduced. Tea is now a drink served with every meal.
I decided, for my second restaurant, I would try a cuisine that I have never tried before. I do not like to go outside of my comfort zone as far as food goes, but I gave it a shot this time in the name of education. I chose Indian food as my next meal to conquer; my roommate and I chose a place down the street from us called Taj Mahal. Just like my first restaurant, Penang, the outside of this restaurant also put me off. It is one of the many small buildings that makes up a strip mall/shopping center. As far as restaurants go, I have never been to one that wasn’t a separate building, so I was slightly put off by it. We went inside anyways, and I am glad I did. The atmosphere was nice; the only thing I think it was lacking was music. Nice background music would have really set the tone for the restaurant. It would have also
