Efficacy of Tea Tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia), Honey, and Capsicum annuum Against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli Kenzie Perryman, Daniela Perez, and Alexa West Department of Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences, College of Agriculture, Science and Engineering, West Texas A&M University, Canyon, TX 79016 November 8, 2015 This experiment was designed to examine the efficacy of naturally occurring antimicrobials against common bacteria located in a normal human microbiome. Three antimicrobials, Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil, commercial honey, and Capsicum annuum (red chili pepper), were tested on the gram negative Escherichia coli and the gram positive Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Quantitative data was taken using the filter-paper disk method to determine the zones of inhibition produced by the three antimicrobials. The results collected showed that Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil is an effective broad spectrum antimicrobial, while honey produced partial inhibition with an outer ring of stimulation signifying that the honey is merely bacteriostatic for a short period of time before growth reoccurs. The Capsicum annuum (red chili pepper) stimulated bacterial growth indicating possible contamination or lack of antimicrobial properties.
