Electoral College Importance

The Electoral College has been instituted since 1787 and is a group of people that elect the United State President and Vice President. The United States citizens do not directly vote for the president, but their vote is considered by electors that have pledged to vote for the winning candidate. There are 538 electors which corresponds with the 100 senators and the 435 representatives plus 3 electors for the District of Columbia. An elector is nominated or appointed by their state’s party and are usually well connected. Congressmen and high ranking U.S. officials are prohibited from being electors. In most states they follow a “Winner takes all” format, where the elector votes for the candidate who wins the popular vote. The Electoral College systems is outdated and illogical for the present and should be abolished.

Though our founding fathers created the Electoral College over 200 years ago, it has been changed with time to accommodate modern needs and is still an important and necessary part of our electoral system. The Electoral College ensures political stability in our nation by encouraging the two-party system and also protects the interests of minorities. Furthermore, the Electoral College helps maintain a united country by requiring widespread popular support of a candidate in order for him or her to become president.

What is the Electoral College? The Electoral College is consisted of educated people who become electors. They come together from each state every four years to vote for the upcoming president and vice president. The “Founding Fathers” of the Constitution thought that the public intelligence of choosing a president wasn’t as efficient as the Electoral College intended. In 1803, the Constitution Framers created a legislative branch, so that the president and vice president are qualified for the occupation, this is decided by the Electoral College. The United States has used the Electoral College as a way to elect the president for over two hundred years and it is a main reason the smaller states have a chance to voice their opinion. The Electoral College has caused great debate within the US as to whether or not it is a political anachronism. The Electoral College consists of 538 total votes which are then divided up based on the population of each state and at least 270 electoral votes are required for a president to win the election. A consensus is taken every ten years to see if the population of each state has increased or decreased therefore changing the number of electoral votes it will receive. Some people argue that if the majority of the population wants a candidate to be president then that is the best way to elect someone but that is not necessarily true.

The Electoral College is a form of process that consists of the electors’ selection. It is the meeting of the electors in which they will conduct the selection of the President and the Vice President. The process also involves the electoral votes counting by Congress. All around the world there are many different ways through which countries decide their leader, in America for instance we use a unique system called the Electoral College. Every person in the U.S. who is 18 years old and above can vote in the presidential elections, this is called the popular vote. A person while voting may think his and every other person’s vote would determine the next president, but this isn't entirely true. What really happens is that the system called the Electoral College takes place which then decides the next president. It consists of 538 electors who cast votes to determine the next president and vice president, which is known as the electoral vote. When people vote, their votes aren’t really gathered up and counted to see who won a certain state but what happens is that these votes determine which candidates would receive the electors of the state. Different states have different number of electors which depend on the number of the state's Senators and the House Representatives which in turn depends on the population as the number of the House Representatives depends on the number of people in a state. The United States is considered the leader in promoting democratic values worldwide. For this very reason, the United States has engaged in conflicts and negotiations around the world to allow the people of different countries the ability to freely and directly elect their leaders. However, the United States remains the only democratic country in the world that does not allow the people to directly elect their President. Instead, the United States opts for the undemocratic institution of the Electoral College, in which electors from each state are chosen and these electors are the actual people that cast the votes that decide the presidential election. The Founders set up a system in Article II Section I of the Constitution that guarantees, “each state shall appoint… a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress,” and that, “the Person having the greatest Number of Votes shall be President, if such Number be a Majority of the Number of Electors appointed” (Constitution).
