The future American commuter will undoubtedly have to transition from the use of fossil fuels to new alternatives due to the diminishing availability of the nation’s oil resources. How will America respond to this upcoming issue? It is difficult to predict which alternative fuel source America will ultimately choose, but with the premier of Nissan’s electric powered Leaf and other companies; such as Tesla Motors and Chevy, with their electric cars ready for market, the electric car may be winning the race to become the new standard for the gasoline alternative. As Michael Horn (2010), aerospace scientist, discusses in his article “Roadmap to the electric car economy” in The Futurist the problems that gasoline imposes along with its inefficiencies, and that America and its consumers used about137.8 billion gallons of gasoline just in the year 2008. At an average cost of $3.55 per gallon that cost Americans half a trillion dollars, half of which would be eliminated by the adopted use of the electric car. Though this potential savings raises eyebrows, is it enough to incur the potential costs of the electric car movement? Value, it’s how consumers decide on which purchases to make. Is the cost of the product or service worth my money, if so by how much, and what other establishments offer the same viable options at a potentially better deal? With various car competitors and options out there, careful consideration must be taken to determine the electric car value to your lifestyle. Not every commuter has the same requirements. Some may travel long daily drives, short stop and go traffic, or simply the occasional errand running. Depending on which type of driver you are, will vary the size of battery you will need. The bigger the battery and larger the storage, the higher the costs.
