In the story, the main character has an affectionate devotion towards his black cat, Pluto. One night, the cat bites the man on the hand so he ferociously “grasped the poor beast by the throat and deliberately cut one of its eyes form the socket” (Poe 2). The main character carries on to get a new nearly identical black cat to replace Pluto. As time goes on, the main character confesses his “absolute dread of the beast” (Poe 4) because it is a constant reminder of his guilt for tormenting Pluto. The man decides to kill the second cat but his wife frantically steps in to stop him so he “withdrew [his] arm from her grasp and buried the axe in her brain” (Poe 5) killing her instantly. As the bird keeps tapping, he finally decides to go open the door. As he peers out into the darkness, his loneliness engulfs him, evoking his “surcease of sorrow- sorrow for the lost Lenore- for the rare and radiant Maiden named Lenore,” who is “nameless [there] forevermore”(Poe 436).
