Elements of Pastiche in Wall-E, a Postmodernism Analysis

ANALYSIS

An example of postmodernism application in film is WALL-E. It is an animation movie released in 2008 by Pixar Animation Studios. The film is about a robot named WALL-E. Throughout the story, there are references or similar encounters with the previous or past works in films. These elements are the pastiche of WALL-E.

3.1 Post-Apocalyptic Earth First of all, the setting of earth in WALL-E is clearly a resemblance of other post-apocalypse films. 28 Days Later (2002) is one obvious example of this. Both films take place in the post-apocalyptic world and the earth is portrayed as the abandoned planet. Also, there are clips within the films which describe the preceding events that commence the apocalypse.

The pictures above depict the situations in which WALL-E (picture 5) and R2D2 (picture 6) traveled into space by ship, although the purposes of their journey were different. WALL-E hung on the ship’s panel to follow EVE, but R2D2 was in the tube of the ship to accompany Anakin Skywalker in battling the enemies’ ships.
In addition, both WALL-E and R2D2 are portrayed to be helping the realization of a great cause. On one hand, WALL-E plays an important role in informing the humans that the earth is a safe place to live again. On the other hand, R2D2 helps the other more significant characters in battling the evils. Moreover, both movies also share another similarity which is the physical setting the story takes place. More than half of the story of WALL-E happens inside a spaceship, and this idea can also be seen in Star Wars saga where more than one spaceship is involved in the six movies.

The picture on the left above (picture 10) is the Axiom, the spaceship where the humans lived post apocalypse in “WALL-E”, while the picture on the right (picture 11) is one of the many spaceships seen in Star Wars saga.
