In Wiesel's novel, Night, it takes place towards the end of World War 2 at the climax of the Holocaust. The story follows Elie Wiesel, a teenage boy, who recounts horrific memories of his experience during the Holocaust. In a few instances, the protagonist reshapes his faith through his experiences in the Nazi concentration camp. Such instances include scene where Wiesel is introduced to the concentration camp in Birkenau, the public execution in Buna, and the act of defiance toward God. Throughout the story Wiesel's value of faith undergoes a drastic transformation during his ordeal in the Holocaust.
At the beginning of the story, Wiesel was focused on studying the Jewish faith. He was a student of Judaism and wanted to explore the Kabbalah. Wiesel got glimpse of these teaching from Moishe the Beadle, who emphasized on the idea of questioning to connect with God. All is well until the Nazi began to occupy Wiesel's town of Sighet. After transferring from different camps, Wiesel ends up in the Buna concentration camp along with his father. Where they continue to work their way to “freedom” One striking scene during the Buna camp experience was the public execution of prisoners. Of those prisoners, one of them was a boy accused of sabotaging an electrical plant. In which, he was to be executed by hanging, however the boy survived the drop and manage to stay alive during the execution. It does mention that the boy suffered a painful experience before dying. In this scene, Wiesel also questions God's silence “Where he is? This is where-hanging here from this gallows … “(65). This scene had a significant impact on Wiesel as it served as a reality check an further cementing Wiesel's changing faith/attitude toward God.
