Today, in my placement at Elim Springs Retirement home, I had the opportunity to complete a days worth of care and assistances to residents. I began my day with a shower to an assigned resident who required minimal assistance, and preferred his independences. Then, I proceeded with a partner to help assist with a sponge bath to a resident who had the tendency to become slightly violent. This experience has given me a new perspective on areas where I may need to improve on such as understanding my safety precautions as well as how interact using different mechanisms. In the future I am more then likely going to see this behaviour, and being exposed to it while under supervision is great tool when needing to ask questions to excel better in
As a MSW student at a long term care home, I get an opportunity to take on many duties and activities. For starters, I get to do a lot of administration work including filing, faxing, photocopying, writing thank you letters for those who came for the tour of the home, mailing care conference letters to families to let them know when it is and making phone calls to family members as well as different agencies such as Community Care Access Centre (CCAC). One of the main duties and most important I find is visiting residents and addressing any concerns they may have. This can include issues that they may be experiencing with another resident and connecting them with different services such as Amy’s Helping Hands and transportation services. To
Throughout this entire clinical placement I have encountered helping people every day. The majority of my days ranged from performing a bed bath or sitting down for
I would like to drop the course OCG 110 because I no longer need the course for my major’s general education requirement. At the end of last semester, I switched my major from Marketing to English. While in the Marketing program, I needed only two natural sciences to complete my general education course requirement. As such, I took the course BIO 286 last semester and received a B-, and enrolled in OCG 110 for this semester. At the beginning of this semester, however, I decided to double major in English and Elementary Education. I had only officially changed my major to Elementary Education recently— within the first two weeks of October— and did not realize that I needed to take a science with a lab in order to meet the Elementary Education
To effectively complete your job assignment you have to have adequate training and procedures to provide sufficient, quality care to the clients that are served throughout long-term care facilities. According to Barbarotta (2010), the most useful trainings for direct care staff were, “Communicating with residents, coping with grief, caring for residents with mental illnesses, and problem behaviors, resident care skills such as bathing, eating and dressing, and working with other direct care professionals” (p. 13). Direct care staff also prefers a more hands-on approach for training versus videos and reading directly from
I volunteer at the Kennedy Health Care Center, and as a volunteer, I am directly involved with the long-term care patients of the facility. Throughout the whole experience, I learned a great deal about interacting with confused and scared individuals because many of the residents at the facility have some form of dementia. I will never forget one specific interaction that taught me a valuable lesson on the impact of those working in healthcare. There was an elderly resident in the facility that was known to be difficult to deal with. She would incessantly cry out “Save me!" although there was nothing wrong. Because this was typical behavior for the women, the people around her would often pay little attention to her. One afternoon I saw that this women’s cries were irritating the other residents in the dayroom. I went up to the women and began talking to her to try to calm her down. I was able to get her to realize that there was nothing wrong. Once she was calm I asked her if she would like me to paint her nails, and she looked thrilled with my proposition. After I painted her nails, I witnessed her entire mood change. Instead of shouting, she spent the rest of the afternoon showing off her newly painted nails. I saw her entire mood change simply from me taking the time to show her that I cared. When I become a nurse, my day will be full of opportunities to show patients that I care, and that is something that I look forward
The experience working with him and the other residents has solidified my passion for helping others overcome adversity and function at their highest potential. Throughout the months I gained tremendous amounts of patience. Just as importantly, I was able to apply a multitude of de-escalation techniques and behavior modification strategies so that residents could lead a more positive day-to-day life. They were integrated into community activities, ranging from handing over their own money when making purchases to participation in volunteer events and the Special
On September 6, 2017, I were documented for an incident that involved a University Housing policy violation. I was charged with violating the University Housing Alcohol 1.2 policy. With my violation, came consequences. I met with The Residence Conduct Coordinator to discuss my actions and came to the conclusion that I would have to schedule a meeting with The Campus Alcohol and Drug Education Center (CADEC) and with that, a reflection paper.
I had to understand the circumstances in which people were in and how interact with residents respectfully and compassionately which provided opportunities for personal growth by practicing integrity, justice and good stewardship. Though I was a bit hesitant, my experience has been very positive. Just being a volunteer without any related experience or skills, I was unqualified to help and many ways. The few menial tasks that I was able to do seemed to be met with much enthusiasm and appreciation. Simply helping someone to their seat bringing them a cup of tea or
In this assignment, I will reflect upon an incident within the clinical practice involving a smoker patient . For the purpose of this assignment, Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle (1988) has been used to guide the reflection on the incident. The patient's name, in relation to confidentiality will not be used according to NMC confidentiality.
Feedback from my supervisor and Harmony House residents, regarding my ability to work one-on-one with residents.
Over the course of the semester, I have been fortunate enough to work with a student who is having difficulties when it comes to reading. My student does not have difficulties when it comes to hearing a word, but rather when he sees a word. My student has definitely benefited from one on one work with me as well as the additional help he’s getting from the reading specialist during their WIN (what I need) time. My student does not like to read because he knows that he is struggling and he is embarrassed about it. When my student goes to his WIN time, he does really well because the instruction is at his level and there are only two other students who are also on the same level there as well. Besides the current intervention, programs I would recommend are Direct Instruction: Reading Mastery, Letter Spacing, Wilson Reading System and the Lindamood program (LiPS).
Throughout the course of the semester we have covered three different philosophers and how those three philosophers think differently. Our first philosopher was Friedrich Nietzsche. The second philosopher was Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The third and final philosopher was Martin Heidegger. This paper is going to consists of Martin Heidegger’s work and how he thinks his way through the journey of his life.
claim. They agreed that I should try something new, for a change. I than made the decision to
I have always had an interest in the history of the world and the different cultures that have developed. History was a fascinating subject it lets you look into the past, but it will also give you a glimpse of the future if you pay attention. So I went and took all the history classes that I could at Crafton. The religious classes in the beginning were just to fulfill the prerequisite to transfer, then it became if you take these two more classes you will get a degree in it, then it became my major when I decided to transfer.
When I was a child, my mother enrolled me in weekly piano lessons. These classes were not relaxing; in fact, it was like school. There were weekly music theory quizzes and at the end of the year, I had to have songs memorized to play in front of a judge who would authorize my completion of the grade level. That annual experience was torture for me because I had horrible stage fright just to play in front of one kind elderly individual. To say I detested the classes was quite the understatement. My brothers adjusted easily and enjoyed learning a new craft. I, however, had complaints going to class, leaving class, and throughout the week. I had no passion for the music, but I had no choice but to force myself to learn. The semester before beginning college, I graduated from the piano program. Years of surface level learning and not really absorbing piano material had finally come to an end. I knew in my heart I would never touch a piano willingly ever again.
