How would you feel sitting for 8 hours a day twelve months a year having to information bombarded to you? The two months of summer break that we students currently have are probably one the most valued and anticipated for every teenager. They see themselves relaxing, going on vacations, visiting family, and creating great memories during those two months of freedom. Regrettably this prospect may no longer be available, since the local school board proposes to change the school year from ten months to year round. They seem persistent on extending the school year with the argument of expanding educational opportunities. Contrary to what many think extending the school year will bring about a myriad of problems not just for the students but to the community. Chiefly it drastically effect the economy, there will be no real educational impact, and lastly it interfere with any and all plans that student have for their precious summer vacation.
Getting rid of summer break would hurt a lot of students; they do not have the patience to go to school during the school year—taking away what is supposed to be their vacation could possibly break them.
Some schools already have trouble being able to afford supplies and other commodities, such as food and air conditioning, for students during the eight months that they are in school; imagine how much it would cost a school if students went attended school during the hot, humid summer days. Not all schools have a lot of money and struggle enough as it is, going to school longer and having shorter breaks would cause schools to cut certain funds and maybe even get rid of certain programs to just be able to pay for necessities that a school requires.
Do you think kids should have summer break? Summer break gives families more time to make memories, it releases stress off of the students and teachers, it also gives more time for events to be made. Summer break can help out on a lot. No kids would want to stay in a hot classroom all year round when they could be outside enjoying the summer days.
Most importantly, improving the U.S. educational system by increasing the time attending school will not improve the countries education. Why? The summer breaks are designed to allow the students and educators to take a break before the next school year. Many students and teachers are suffering from 'school burnout' and need the time to relax and
Students will get the news of no summer and play in school instead of doing their work. By having
Not every child prefers summer, and by having breaks spanning throughout different times of the year, each student would be able to enjoy every season however they please without the worry of school. The amount of intelligence a child has is more beneficial for a child's future, and even if a child's favorite season is Summer, a year-round school schedule could be more beneficial for the child in the long run.
The opposers of year round schooling have little argument to work with, but stress it strongly. The summer is a prime time for high school students to pick up short-term jobs to help pay for looming college fees, jobs like being a lifeguard at the pool is not available all year round throughout the United States. College students also have the opportunity to enroll in summer classes in order to meet pre-requisites for other classes. Summer classes could be a deciding factor on how early a student graduates. Also, a three-month summer break creates an easier, less stressful timeframe to plan a vacation. Instead of working a vacation into the shorter, known breaks of year round schooling, parents have three months to figure their week long vacation into. The most powerful argument is the effect on extracurricular activities. The frequent, short breaks in year round schooling would have an effect on extracurriculars like band because it would be required that they take the vacation off and could miss potential time to prepare before a performance. The traditional schooling system is still the majority in the United States even with very few benefits and no advantage over year round
The summer heat is beating on the aquatic blue pool while kids splash and play like dolphins jumping in and out of the water while the lifeguard stands have young-adults who are working their first Summer job. This is how Summer has been with the traditional school year, but the summer dream is being threatened with a new type of school year called year-round schooling. This takes away summer by replacing it with smaller breaks that would be regulated depending on the number of days you go to school. The idea is that it would provide a way to increase education rates and fix the problem of overcrowding, and currently it has only done one of these things. Schools should avoid switching to year round schooling due to its lack of an educational benefit, its economic
Year-round schooling even brings Summer break difficulties, given the seemingly endless school year. If students are still in school over the Summer, it’s difficult for parents to schedule meaningful family time. Students are even missing out on unique, important learning opportunities. Missing out on experiences and lessons you can’t get in a classroom. Summer break is the main relief teachers have after an intense school year.
The idea of having school go year-round is definitely an interesting one. There a clearly many benefits in getting rid of summer vacation, one of them being that students lose information over the summer. According to Harris Cooper from “The Ten-Month School Year: Are We Ignoring Educational Research in Order to Preserve Summer Vacation? Finding a Compromise Between Educational Advancement and Over-Schooling.” By Mary Therese O’Sullivan, he says that “"[t]ests given to kids in the spring and fall show [that] children generally slide in math and reading during the traditional summer break
I can see this point because we would be having one right in the middle of our current school schedule. But the actual learning time would increase. After breaks, the students would be refreshed and ready to listen better. Also, students won’t have to relearn what they forget over the summer since they would only be out of school for three weeks at a time. When they return after these short breaks, they would be ready to pick up where they left
Besides that, there would be less time for students and teachers to spend with their families. Over the course of this month I was observing a developing study and the results are as stated, Time spent with your family and those who make you smile contributes to certain brain cells called motoneurons that help you absorb information more easily as proven by Dr. Wiken, neurology’s best. Year-round school only provides us with only one-month off during the summer which is a significant decrease of time when compared to the current system that allows students and teachers to receive that time we need with our families and those who makes us smile to help strengthen our minds for the next school year.
Do you ever wonder why the kids cause so much chaos during vacation? Well they have too much time on their hands and not enough supervision. Back when we lived in a basic economy, summer vacation made sense because academic achievement mattered less. An absence of air conditioning or modern hygiene turned crowded schools into health-risks, and children had moms who were home every day. Times have changed now, so we have no need for summer vacation. Year Round schools would be successful because GPAs will rise and graduation rates will increase also children would have a safe place to go
Think about what it is like not to have a summer. One cannot attend fun summer camps, go on once in a lifetime summer vacations, or get a fun summer job. If year-round schools are put into place everywhere, one would only have a thirty-day summer, or less, instead of a three- month summer. They will be hitting the books at school instead of lying out at the pool, relaxing, working a job, or just letting go of all the stress from the school year. Imagine never truly getting a break from school, to be in a continuous cycle with no end. Even though opponents may say the traditional school calendar leads students to forget more over the summer months, a year-round schedule should not put in place because of the initial higher
