Known as The Golden Age in English history, the 45 year rule of Queen Elizabeth I turned the declining country of England, into one of the most powerful and prosperous countries in the world.

Although England faces the menace of the impending Spanish invasion, Queen Elizabeth I reassures her troops that if they commit themselves to the British cause England will be victorious over the Spanish, therefore she incentivises her troops with the promise of honor, glory and wealth. Her purpose is to convince her troops to risk their lives for the safety of England. She accomplishes this by persistent use of parallelism and appeals to ethos.

Elizabeth I (known simply as "Elizabeth" until the accession of Elizabeth II; 7 September 1533 – 24 March 1603) was queen regnant of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death. There were many differing opinions of the leadership of Elizabeth I during her rule in the late sixteenth century. Many believed she was unfit to rule, due to the fact that she was a woman. However, there was also great support for Elizabeth I at the time because she was a strong ruler. As a response to the view of the lesser and weak view of women during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Elizabeth I became a strong and very capable ruler to respond to any claims of a woman being an insufficient monarch.

With England torn apart by religious unrest brought about by Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Mary I, Elizabeth I employed a pragmatic plan during the 1500s in order to bring about peace. In introducing a religious policy, she devised a compromise between the theological beliefs of Protestantism and Catholicism. In 1559, Queen Elizabeth attempted to reunite her country, by passing the Act of Supremacy and the Act of Uniformity (Pitchard 105). The Act of Supremacy stated that Queen Elizabeth I was the most powerful ruler of England; this acts also made her the Supreme Governor of the Church (Elizabeth I). The Act of Uniformity was a set of rules regarding the new Elizabethan Church (Elizabeth R). Rules of the Church were basic and simple. All people of England had to attend church on Sundays and holidays. A fine was issued to those who did not attend church, the money collected was then used to help the poor (Elizabeth R).

Living strictly under Queen Elizabeth I has many down sides. You listen to what she says and you practice the religion that she wants you too, you have no choices. Constantly being forced to do as told by Queen Elizabeth I says takes a toll on the colonists. That could all possibly change, now that there is a way to go to America. Not knowing what the New World will hold, people from England traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to get rich and be able to practice their own religion. The men traveled to America and had a very extended journey but they were very excited for what the new world held for them. All the men traveling had expectations of what the New World was going to be like and didn’t want the trip to take as long as it did. Once the colonist got there they soon had to realize that reality was going to sank in and they saw what it was actually going to be like at this new place.

Elizabeth I, monarch of England, and Marie de l’Incarnation, a French nun, both invoked God and other forms of religious power to stake their claims to authority. Elizabeth’s role as a queen came at a time when her country was going through political turmoil. Marie’s role as a missionary in New France was to civilize the indigenous people. Although working to better their countries, both of these writers are vastly different due to their social positions. While Elizabeth had the substantial task of ruling over her country, Marie was serving her country as a missionary; however, both writers utilize religion to accomplish their various duties.

In 1559 Elizabeth I (1533-1603) was crowned Queen. Elizabeth sought to find a middle ground during her rein (1558-1603) in England, by allowing both Catholics and Protestants to worship without fear of any repercussions. However, Gilbert (1976) that ‘Elizabeth I and her successors had legislated to make Anglican worship compulsory’ (p. 4). By introducing the Act of Uniformity of 1559 it laid out the rules of worship that both religions were to follow and reissued the Book of Common Prayer for use in worship. The Thirty-Nine Articles of 1563 also set to define the doctrine of the Church of England which set out a middle path between the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church and the Protestants (Wolffe, 2008). Elizabeth was an immensely popular Queen, and her popularity has waned little with the passing of four hundred years. She is still one of the best-loved monarchs, and one of the most admired rulers of all time. She became a legend in her own lifetime, famed for her remarkable abilities and achievements. Yet, about Elizabeth the woman, we know very little. She is an enigma, and was an enigma to her own people.

The long, lasting conflict between Queen Elizabeth and Mary Queen of Scots was the fight over the throne. Elizabeth and Mary we second cousins and Mary thought she deserve the crown. The conflict between Elizabeth and Mary ended up leading to Mary’s death.
