"I'm doing a talk show. It's not my job to get into an argument with somebody about religion or politics or sexuality or anything. It is my job to make people laugh." - Ellen Degeneres

Ellen Degeneres
Ellen Lee Degeneres, an American comedian, television host, actress, writer, and producer, was born on January 26, 1958 to parents Betty and Elliott Degeneres in Metairie, Louisiana. She has an older brother named Vance. When Ellen was a teenager, her parents got divorced. She moved to a small town in Texas called Atlanta with her mother. During her mother's divorce, she was extremely depressed. In order to help her, Ellen used comedy and her jokes to help lift her mother’s depression. After graduating from Atlanta High School in 1976, she moved back to Louisiana where she held down a list of jobs that did not suit her and her personality. From hostess to bartender to oyster shucker, she was not enjoying herself while working. She concluded that the only way for her to be happy was to be independent. She didn’t want to follow other people’s rules so she made a career for herself. At age 23, she started her comedy career. She started to perform for her friends and at local comedy club and coffeehouse. In 1982, Ellen entered a national talent contest and used her comedy on the crowd. She ended up winning the contest and got the of the “Funniest Woman in America”. She got the opportunity to travel around the country to perform her
Thank you very much for your generosity! Honestly, there are no words to accurately express my humble gratitude for this remarkable gift offered by you, Marion and Anne Williams. I'm soon to be an undergraduate at Virginia Tech, and I plan to both major in Astronautical Engineering and minor in Computer Science. Ever since my early childhood, I've always been fascinated by the unknowns of space. For instance, it's quite hard to imagine looking at something as massive as Jupiter when you're only given images on Google. Although the images are tremendous, just looking at the planet with your very own eyes could make an astronaut out of anyone. Yet, I'm not actually looking forward to be an astronaut. It's been my dream to work at NASA, but it's
Transition. Clara didn’t let her age or resources get in the way of her goals. She earned her own money to pay for her books by sewing and writing letters for neighbor who didn’t know how to read or write.
Have you ever been daring enough to think outside the box or do something out of the ordinary? Maybe you have, or maybe you’ve been too scared to do it. Someone who wasn’t afraid was Amelia Earhart. She did something no one else had done or attempted to do before. Amelia Earhart, daring and outgoing from the start of her life, achieved many things, which is why she should be remembered because, indeed, flying is what ended her life.
“Women’s rights are human rights, and human rights are women’s rights.” On September 5, 1995, 180 countries met in Beijing, China for the U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women Plenary Session listening to Hillary Clinton’s speech on women’s rights. (Clinton, 1995) Clinton spoke powerfully and bravely, in a communist country with a widespread maltreatment of women. The speech addressed governments and humans rights organizations, addressing problems that every country faced concerning the freedom of women. She united the audience in connecting the topic on an international level, and spoke urgently, using ethos, pathos, and logos. Beginning the speech, she is very gracious, which portrays her likability. This was a very influential, as it was one of the first well received speeches of its time given in this communist country trying to give a voice to women.
Bill Bill Bill Bill Bill Nye the science guy! Haha, that might've been a little corny. Mr. Nye, I hope you find the time to read this, I used to be a huge fan of yours in elementary school. However, I lost contact with you after entering middle school. I'm 20 years old now, and just about 2 years ago I somehow stumbled upon your name on one of the greatest websites ever, the almighty YouTube. I was instantly hooked to you and your videos on there. I found you because of my recently acquired passion for evolutionary biology and environmental physics in college. Honestly, I also have to give a lot of credit to the Cosmos: A Spacetime Oddessy (where is season 2 at?!) and Interstellar. They both contributed to my curiosity about the universe and
The session that I attended was Dolores Huerta speech, which was very interesting. Dolores Huerta was born on April 10, 1930, she is a labor leader and civil rights activist who, along with Cesar Chavez, co-founded the national Farmworkers association, which later became the United Farm Workers (UFW). Huerta has received numerous awards for her community service and advocacy for workers, immigrants, and women’s rights. She is truly a leader, working tirelessly to help the poor and women and children. She talks about war, genocide, Mass incarceration, and poverty. During her participation in non-violent protest she was arrested 22 times trying to make changes in society. Her main question was what can we do as people to solve things in the
In the commencement speeches before the Classes of 2009 at Tulane and Auburn University, well known TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and former baseball and football player, Bo Jackson, deliver two compelling speeches inspiring their audiences to go into the real world and be the best person they can be. Bo Jackson and Ellen DeGeneres both successfully utilize their own techniques in order to get their message across. DeGeneres has a lighter approach often making jokes but delivers her message of being true to yourself and finding who you are. Jackson’s address is more serious tone yet still inspires the audiences to get out of their comfort zone and make your parents proud.
In the intro of Elizabeth Warren's Democratic Convention Speech, you can tell right away she’s very passionate about the phenomenon of social mobility. She values hard work and knows the system is rigid for the middle classes. Warren mentions, “hard-working people: people who get up early, stay up late, cook dinner and help out with homework; people who can be counted on to help their kids, their parents, their neighbors, and the lady down the street whose car broke down; people who work their hearts out but are up against a hard truth—the game is rigged against them.” These are all traits of a hard worker in the middle class who’s fighting to move up the ladder with their hard work. Elizabeth Warren experience depicts a great example of social mobility.
From the Emancipation Proclamation to the Jim Crowe laws of 1965, African Americans have been fighting for their rights, freedom and a voice in society for decades. African Americans were introduced to people, specifically Caucasians as individuals only regarded as legal property with a force placed upon them to obey others superior than them according to society. As she was used to the constant disadvantage and mistreatment displayed towards African Americans, it was an unreal moment for young Oprah Winfrey as she observed Sidney Poiter walk across the stage to accept the award of “best actor at the 36th Academy Awards”. Poiter’s award for best actor not only came as shock, moment of change in society for Winfrey but for all African Americans as Poiter became the first African American male to receive an award at the Golden Globes. In the same fashion, years later at the Golden Globes, Oprah Winfrey accepted the honorary “Cecil B. Demille” award becoming the first African American female to win the astounding award. As accepting her award, Winfrey delivered a speech that impacted not only the crowd but all those watching through her exquisite nomenclature and use of rhetorical
Did you know, before Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama there was Shirley Chisholm. Shirley Chisholm was an African American female congresswoman who ran for the presidency in 1972, as a Democrat. When she ran for presidency she didn’t run for the blacks or for females, she ran for the people of America. To be a social game changer implies that an individual must be an impact towards change and inspire others to change. Shirley Chisholm was an excellent congress person she had a special insight with words and established herself as an outspoken person & was determined for change early in her 1st term. Her presidential crusade was unexpected & historical, and she spoke out her mind on the equality for the people.
Mrs. LaToya Cantrell is the candidate for the people she has dedicated her life to serving her community and improving their quality of living for the city of New Orleans. I am supporting Mrs. Latoya Cantrell because her agenda is for the people. It is not many people that hold a sit in the government that stills listen to the concerns of the citizens. Also, try to go out their way to address those concerns. Latoya is a more of a Community leader than a Politician. As citizens, we complain about the lack of representation for all in the government. I believe that she is the candidate to help fix the city problems and contribute to bringing communities back to life. Don’t you want someone that listens and cares about your concern and take action?
With twenty-two books to her name, I'm a little surprised I haven't read Nancy Mehl's work...until now. Fatal Frost, is set in St. Louis where the U.S. Marshals and local police are working to thwart a powerful drug cartel's plans to take over their city. Hope surges when a CI slips a video into the hands of officer Nick Brennan, but just as quickly fades when a mole within the department betrays the Brennan—resulting in his death. Now that last person to have contact with Nick, his daughter Mercy, is targeted by the cartel. Immediate and decisive action may be the only way to protect Mercy, ensnare the cartel, and root out a mole.
As human beings the vast majority of us wish we could change the world, whether that be helping humans, animals, the environment, it is helping those that cannot help themselves. However, we also realize to help with these causes it takes money and for the most part a great deal of it. But, some people are fortunate enough and can help change the lives of many. That is what Ellen DeGeneres has done with her leadership skills, guidance, celebrity status and wealth. Through her kind heart and passion for the social good she does everything she can to make the world a better place. It is true that money can certainly help in spanning social good, however, multiple pennies can also impact those in need. Social good is something that anyone can do. It is not about celebrity status or being a millionaire. Social good is about feeling good about helping others when they are in need. It is about creating a sense of connectedness to humanity and being humble all the while influencing those that follow you. This is what Ellen DeGeneres is all about. This paper will discuss, Ellen 's foundations and charities, how these reflect her personal values and leadership integrity, how her giving enhances her celebrity image and whether her integrity is compatible with her image.
Leni Riefenstahl was one of the most controversial filmmakers of the twentieth century. She was well known for her imposing propaganda films in support of the Nazi Regime, in which she should be held accountable for glorifying the Nazi’s and her involvement with Hitler. Based on the evidence gathered, my speech will show that Leni Riefenstahl is guilty as a war criminal for her contribution to Nazi mayhem. From the earliest accounts of Riefenstahl’s career, it is clear that she was prepared to use others and their money to benefit herself. Riefenstahl and Hitler both shared a close and intimate relationship.
This is Robyn Dumalo from your Phil 345 class. I just wanted to let you know that I will not be able to attend class today because I have the stomach flu since Sunday and it's only gotten worst for me. I will be going to the doctors tomorrow to get checked up. I'm very sorry for missing class time and I hope you can understand my situation. Thank you very much for your time and hope to see you during our next class session.
