Since the 1890’s, Coca Cola has been extremely successful, has obtained billions of dollars in profit, and has grown into a huge icon around the world. When the company was founded in Atlanta, Georgia, they have continuously attempted to incorporate American values into their products within their advertisements. In 2008, Coca Cola published an advertisement that reflected American icons throughout the mid-1900s. The purpose of the ad is to show the buyers of this product that Coca Cola will never go out of style because it is seen as a classical icon throughout American history. Through the designer’s choice of text, color scheme, and images, the company portrays itself as an American classic. The brand typically uses popular bands and musicians that the citizens of the United States have grown to love. In the bottom right of the advertisement is one of the most influential musicians in America, Elvis Presley. Elvis is known as “the king of rock n’ roll,” a name rightfully given to him because he introduced the country to a new style of music and created a whole new era in the music industry. The use of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones reminds the customers of how the company has evolved with the bands. Although both of them originated in England, they helped Elvis introduce and spark the era of rock n’ roll in America. All three of these musicians became huge icons in the music industry with their music known and appreciated worldwide. After he graduated high school in 1953 Presley visited Memphis Recording Service, also the home of Sun Records to record his voice (rockhall.com). He’s also remembered for his music because made the birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll. He became a national star in 1956 (rollingstone.com). Elvis didn’t only make Rock ‘n’ Roll music he made some gospel, country, pop and the black R&B.
In her article “Advertisements R Us,” Melissa Rubin notes that Coke’s message in the ad she analyzes is that “Coke will refresh and unite working America” (249). Her evidence for this is based on several things—for instance, right in the middle of ad sits a large Coke machine and the bottom of the ad explicitly states, “A welcome host to workers—Inviting you to the pause that refreshes with ice-cold Coca-Cola” (249). She concludes her article with the insight that “Coke ads helped shape the American identity,” pointing to the underlying message of the ad that Coke can provide the carefree, joyful life it never fails to portray in its ads to everyone who takes a sip (250).

His family was poor, so in 1948, Elvis Presley’s dad, Aron Presley and mom, Gladys Presley moved to Memphis, Tennessee.
Sam Philips hooked Elvis’s first live performance with a guest artist of Moore’s country-western band that was on tour. This was his start in becoming the national phenomenon. Not too much later, there was a music Jamboree held in Memphis that was staged at an outdoor city park. There were many country singers who showed up to the event. Elvis even performed at this occasion, yet still unidentified for which genre he would be placed under.
Rock and Roll was formed in the early 1940’s. It played a major role in our communities, and influenced a lot of the sounds you still hear today. If you have grandparents, or even parents that were music fans around the 1960’s-1970s, I can guarantee you they probably have heard the name Elvis Presley a time or two, and can probably even recall a few or more of his songs. The commercial also incorporated a presentation of the country's varying sprawling landscapes and metropolitan areas, along with Americans of different ethnicities, races, and families partaking in real life activities. With these elements: a patriotic song, playing on emotion, and an invocation of profound imagery, we see several of the tactics mentioned in both articles tackled in Coke's commercial.
