Embryo Persuasive Speech

Good Essays

The act of removing an embryo or fetus before it can survive outside the uterus raises major issues. From these aborted children, embryonic stem cells or ESC’s, can be withdrawn out of the embryo and planted into adults. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent stem cells derived from the inner cell mass of a blastocyst, an early-stage preimplantation embryo. Isolating the embryoblast results in destruction of the blastocyst, this raises ethical issues, including whether or not embryos at the preimplantation stage should be considered to have the same moral or legal status as more developed human beings. We have to discuss and decide on some of the obstacles which must be overcome before large scale clinical trials can be considered and whether …show more content…

One of the many issues that comes forth with embryonic stem cell research is whether the embryo has the same moral status as an adult. Furthermore, a human embryo is a human being in the embryonic stage, just as an infant is a human being in the infant stage. Although the embryo does not have the full characteristics of a person, it will become one and should be given the same respect of one. The moral status the embryo has for the person it is

trying to grow in, is the same moral status we should have for it. This means that it should be protected from the moment the sperm fertilizes the egg.

As well as ethical issues, there is also unexpected results and effects from stem cell usage. This includes the passing on of viruses and diseases from other animals. Patients who receive stem cells are put on strong drugs to make sure that the transplant was successful, but these medications actually ‘wipe out’ their immune system. This makes them more susceptible to viruses that are present in the stem cells. Animal sources are also used to provide nutrients to the stem cells that are cultivated in a laboratory. The humans receiving cell-based therapies could get various diseases that were in the animals before. This is a huge concern since stem cell screening is currently insufficient to detect disease that may be
