Growing up in poverty as a child we would always look for free resources throughout our community to assist us with clothing, food and low income programs such as housing. One of the main resources we found really valuable was a food bank community center located in our city of Pittsburg, CA. We will go every other week to stack up on foods like produce, diary, can foods and frozen meats. Sometimes when we didn't have enough food to eat during the week we would head over to the Emergency Food Bank provided free meals. I am glad that we live in a society were communities can work among each other to help the people in need. This why I have chosen this specific topic to write my paper on due to the past childhood experiences i've had. San Joaquin …show more content…
They provide a variety programs that befits all the community from retail business to farm workers. There are some food bank centers were they allow people to pay in EBT which is food stamps and WIC vouchers. They also provide a program for children called, “Backpack program were they receive a high quality of food to last through out the week. The emergency food bank is always seeking for volunteers, contributions and community support. The food bank also participates in community events throughout the year. For an example this year of April, 2016 they participated in a golf tournament at Brookside Golf & Country Club and sponsored by a organization called SETVPRO which a company that provide emergency services to restoration and cleaning needs such as water damage , fire damage or even mold. " We agree that we remove water and perform clean up services better than we play a round of golf, but it was all for a great cause." said April …show more content…
Etzioni brings up a point when people are sometimes participate in fund raisers they feel like that they are obligated to contribute for soup kitchens and mobile clinics for the homeless shelter. Sounds similar to food-banks, but the only difference are you can only donate food. When you volunteer for special events you are influenced by social pressure to give more than what you originally intended to give. “To put it differently, to the extent that we have lost community, we need to rebuild it, not only because community life is a major source of satisfaction of our deeper personal needs, but because the social pressures community brings to bear are a mainstay of our moral values (Etzioni pg 40
During my second week of my community health hours, I was placed at River City Food Bank. River City Food Bank’s main goal is to lessen hunger in the Sacramento region by offering healthy food and assistance to vulnerable populations. They do not only provide healthy food but they also provide nutrition education and counseling. In addition, they provide diapers for babies and the older population. They also provide health services for mothers and assist them with contraceptives and other important education for their women daily life. Their mission is to help people from all ages, from homeless to the working poor and families who are struggling.
Thesis Statement: The Houston Food Bank uses the efforts of volunteers as well as donations to support the reduction of hunger in the community.
In conclusion, hunger in America is at an all time high due to poverty and the economy. The increasingly high number of starving children has gone up over the past years and needs to be stopped. There are government programs set up to help stop hunger in American, such as, SNAP Food Stamps and WIC. We can get involved by volunteering with Feeding America or other non-for-profit organizations set for feeding the hungry. Food donations and monetary donations have always been a great way to help out for those who don’t have the time to donate.
Overall, this paper is about how poverty is very prominent in our society, and we need to learn more about it. We need to increase aid to low- income families because they cannot support
During the time I spent volunteering at John C. Lincoln’s Food Bank, I was able to provide food, individual hygiene items, and infant supplies to families struggling to obtain these critical items for their families. When I first arrived at the food bank, I spent time constructing care packages with soap, toothbrushes, personal wipes, and other essential items for health care. Later in the day, I had the unique opportunity to assist with the simulated grocery store within the food bank. The structure of the store allowed individuals receiving food to feel as though they were actively participating instead of passively accepting food and feeling helpless. Overall, I was able to instill a sense of self-efficiency in individuals who were struggling to provide for their families while personally interacting and sharing my time in a meaningful way.
“We are Chicago's Jesuit Catholic university - a diverse community seeking God in all things and working to expand knowledge in the service of humanity through learning, justice, and faith.” In attempt to fulfill this mission as a student of Loyola University of Chicago, I decided to volunteer at the Lakeview Pantry. Personally, I believe that this was the most efficient way to effectively volunteer while being myself. I aim to either cultivate or participate in physical change, and at Lakeview, I could.
Early one November morning a woman stared at me with utter disbelief, tears of gratitude streaming down her cheeks."Thank you," she mouthed silently to me, clutching her son to her chest. I was proud knowing that, because of my efforts, her family and many more who struggle with poverty would be able to share a Thanksgiving meal. I knew that many children in my community would not be able to celebrate the holiday as others might because their parents could not afford to buy food items, and so as Vice President of a community service club called Interact, I was inspired to provide these children with a Thanksgiving dinner. The club officers and I sat crowded around our adviser's desk brainstorming how we would collect ingredients. We decided
Hunger in the United States, and how it’s an important topic to write about and that everyone should know about. The hunger in America then and now, we have moved from efficient scavenging to conspicuous consumption and then back again. The estimated percentage of household waste about 22 percent millions of thousands approximately. Food waste has become a serious issue in our society in the last few that affected poor and rich countries as well. We live in a world where so many have no clue about the people in need of food. I feel like so many don’t show their kinder sides to those who need our help and can’t eat. Of course, there are a good proton of people out there who show kindness to those in need. Just think about everyone who is worrying
Previous funds were used to pay the pantry’s one employee, Program Director Stephani Nichols. Her resume is attached. She has brought great value to Project 66 Food Pantry and has provided assistance well beyond her wages. Stephani has enabled the pantry to meet their previous goals (find and purchase a building, buy, and implement computers) and has created new goals that meet the needs of the Edmond community.
People think that because there are people that are living well or because they live in major cities like new york city, people mostly think everybody is doing well, but sadly is not the truth there are several families going through hard time trying to find food for their child or just enough to feed them, day by day. According to (feedingamerica.org, 2016) there are 13.1 million of children in america under the age of 18 years that are hunger everyday and in their house they no able to find food for themselves. This paper is a matter of human services, because there are people who are in need and need the help of different institutions to move on and stay
Hunger… this affects an estimate of 13 million children in America and about 795 million people worldwide. Hunger is a severe crisis that has been continuously growing in many homes throughout our community. Children and families in Laredo are suffering from this epidemic and it is important to spread awareness to end it. Personally, I believe that when you help one person, you are one step closer to changing the world. As a human being, it is our duty to recognize the struggles our community faces and help people from our community surpass these problems. A way I would help with humanitarian efforts in our community is by volunteering and sharing the stories of the people whose lives were affected. Around our city of Laredo, in the county of Webb, we have many people that would go hungry if not identified. Many of these people in our community do not qualify for social services due to the family’s being undocumented. It is the community’s responsibility to educate and find these people who might otherwise go hungry. It is a challenge where our border community needs to help and provide the basic needs for children and families in our area. I would like to work hand in hand with local foodbanks and begin to expand a community garden which would provide vegetables to people in need of food. If the community comes together to motivate our population to be aware of hunger in our community, we would all be better because of the help that we may provide
In the United States the children and our elderly population are most vulnerable. A need that needs to be addressed is that older adults have a lack of income. This mean that older adults do not have much money for food, because they have a harder time finding work that is not too labor intense. A program that I propose that would service our older population would be provided meals to older adults in the community. The goals and needs that my service program would satisfied would be food insecurity and the goal would be to increase socialization and promote community involvement. A Congregate meals site in the local community center would serve low income to no income older adults who have a need for food. Congregate meals would provide a good warm and nutritious meal and it would address the hunger and food insecurity that many older adults are facing in many poor communities. I did independent research on similar programs and services that were similar to my service program.
The Wisconsin Food Bank is the recipient of a multi-year gift from Smith County Community Foundation that will double the number of children in the state who participate in its vitally important Kids' lunch Bag Program. Through the Foundation's initial gift of $200,000, more than 700 school children will receive nutritious food during weekends when other resources, including free/reduced price school meals, are not available to them.
Unfortunately not all organizations see the world in a humanitarian point of view, but the handful that do includes The South Texas Food Bank. This organization was founded in 1989 and has been helping the community of Laredo ever since. The South Texas Food Bank allows the unfortunate to receive food and also educate the community about the realities of hunger. It has helped more than ten thousand families throughout the years.
Have you ever wondered where you would rest your head at night? Where you would find your next meal? How would support your family given unforeseen sudden circumstances? I’ve never thought about the importance of these questions until a recent experience I had volunteering at a food pantry. There are organizations whose main purpose is to help those in need and provide resources to members of the community who are going through difficult times. A food pantry is a non-profit community serviced organization that provides members of the community with groceries and resources. From volunteering at this food pantry I learned more than ever to never “judge a book, by its cover”, or in other words, even though I person may look well put together on the outside, you never know what it is they are dealing with on the inside. I’ve encountered homeless members of the community, people who have suffered from physical abuse, and people who have experienced unexpected disasters such as house fires to expected job layoffs while volunteering at a food pantry. I’ve also come to appreciate everything that I have in my life from the roof over my head to the food in my stomach and that some people are less fortunate than me.
